Our goal is to make these resources more accessible worldwide, breaking down language barriers and extending our reach to support even more individuals. These glossaries are designed to unpack commonly used terminology in discussions around SGBVH, empowering individuals, organisations, and communities with the knowledge needed to advocate for prevention, response, and support initiatives. IWiM was thrilled to launch new resources for our Respect at Work platform at the #IDWIM2024 event! In collaboration with the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR), we translated their "Safe Workplaces for All" postcards into Spanish and Portuguese to reach a wider audience. These postcards are now available here: https://lnkd.in/dKZkd_Hk These materials, which were previously only in English, French, and Inuktitut, address sexual harassment in the mining sector. They outline the rights, responsibilities, and support systems available to employers, unions, employees, including complainants, respondents, and witnesses. Accessible formats include postcards, posters, and stickers. What’s in a word? What comes to mind when you hear the term DEI? Diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging etc. are terms on their own and are also frameworks when joined up together and depending on the letter combination emphasise more one area than another. Many nuanced definitions are out there for diversity, equality, equality and inclusion etc., unfortunately making it harder for everyone to clearly understand these terms, align and work together towards achieving similar goals. For example, equity and equality are not synonyms. Both words are often used interchangeably, when in reality, they mean different things and how they are implemented can result in different outcomes for underrepresented groups and individuals. To support the global mining industry, IWiM launched a new DEI Definitions page on our website at our #IDWIM2024 event. This will assist everyone in understanding what terms like #diversity, #equity, #equality and #inclusion mean. Knowledge and data resources are key to create a better and more inclusive mining industry, and they are of vital importance to understand the needs and requirements of #womeninmining today. That’s where IWiM’s Gender and Mining Library comes in! The Library has over 600 reports indexed across 30 topics in multiple languages. It tackles the industry’s lack of detailed data on the female workforce hindering awareness, forecasting, advocacy, and accurate impact assessment. Language has the power to reinforce or deconstruct systems of power that maintain poverty, inequality and suffering. Oxfam created the Inclusive Language Guide as a resource to support people who have to communicate in English to think about how the way they write can subvert or inadvertently reinforce intersecting forms of inequality. Last week, IWiM Founder and Director Barbara Dischinger (She/Her/Hers) spoke at the Future Challenges for Mining seminar hosted by the IOM3 (Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining) in London. During the panel discussion, she shared her views on “Mining companies tell us they are increasingly struggling to recruit and retain talent. Is this at least in part because so very often, people with marginalized identities just don’t feel welcome in mining?” “Absolutely. The challenge of recruiting and retaining talent is deeply connected to how inclusive our workplaces are. However, it is a complex and nuanced issue. More work is required overall before we can say that it is an industry where everyone feels that they belong. It requires a holistic and strategic reset of the workplace; a retrofit is no longer enough. When people feel they can perform, be themselves and that they belong they will stay and be your biggest ambassadors and bring more people to join you.” Barbara focused her reply to Colin Church’s statement on intersectionality using story telling.
