About us

ITOPF has responded to more than 800 incidents involving oil or chemical spills worldwide. Our highly skilled international team is ready to assist 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide impartial technical advice. As a not-for-profit organisation, we have devoted efforts to developing a wide range of technical services to promote effective response in the marine environment to back up our core role of responding to ship-sourced spills. The five key services that we offer are spill response, claims analysis & damage assessment, contingency planning, training and information. Our services are provided to our Members (tanker owners) or Associates (other shipowners) and their oil pollution insurers (normally one of the P&I Clubs), and we offer also our services at the request of governments and intergovernmental organisations such as the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds). Our London and Singapore based team of whom are available to respond to spills, combined with over 45 years’ experience, is what makes us truly unique.

We were delighted to welcome Solis Marine to our offices yesterday. The team, comprising Ros Blazejczyk, Captain Jamie Simpson, Alvin Forster and Simon Hindley (online), provided a fascinating insight into their role in casualty management and gave us a timely and informative presentation on ship design considerations for alternative fuels. The session provided an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of some key issues related to salvage and incident investigations, and helped strengthen relations between our two organisations.

#LPG or Liquefied Petroleum Gas features as the sixth fuel in our #alternativefuels series and is considered a viable alternative fuel in shipping’s race to zero-emissions. The specific composition of LPG varies but primarily comprises propane with butane, or a mixture of both. It is typically converted into its liquid form for ease of storage and transport. It’s been shipped globally in bulk for more than 80 years and the maritime industry has significant experience in handling and shipping this fuel. If released, LPG will rapidly vaporise, and spread over the ground or water surface. LPG vapour is moderately flammable, with a flammability range of 2.2 – 9.5 (v/v) %.   Our report delves into the damage and liabilities arising from incidents involving LPG and takes a look at clean-up and preventative measures, environmental and property damage, as well as potential economic loss and personal injury. We spent time in Greece visiting Frontline as part of its Senior Officers Conference. Dr. Amy Jewell and Joe Lane were on hand representing ITOPF, with Amy delivering presentations on the role ITOPF plays in a marine pollution event, including our role on site as well as our work in handling and administering claims arising from a spill. We showcased our Mixed-Reality (MR) application to attendees, where they were placed in a series of different virtual locations and tasked with managing the clean-up efforts following an oil-spill. Participants were making decisions on how and what resources to use based on the location, volume of substance spilled and the environmental conditions present in each virtual scene. #pollutionresponse #oilspill #mixedreality

Today we celebrate World Maritime Day alongside the International Maritime Organization and the global maritime community. This year’s theme of ‘Navigating the future: safety first’ is a value ITOPF holds closely. Our decades of experience responding to spills of pollutants has enabled us to be attuned to what the future may hold as the shipping industry moves towards decarbonisation, and the potential hazards which new alternative fuels may present. #LNG or Liquefied Natural Gas ⛽ is emerging as a potential alternative fuel in shipping’s bid to decarbonise.   It’s been shipped globally in bulk for more than 60 years and the industry is well versed in handling and transporting the substance. In this fifth instalment of our #alternativefuels series, our report dives into the fate and behaviour of LNG if spilled.   There are an estimated 1,000 vessels currently fuelled by LNG, with the number expected to rise. But as the use of LNG rises as a fuel, what potentials hazards do coastal communities and marine environment face?   We can expect LNG to vaporise when released, producing cold (but flammable) LNG vapours. These vapours condense the moisture in the surrounding air, forming a cloud of water vapour. The water vapour and gaseous LNG mixture will be heavier than air, so is likely to initially spread out into a visible white plume at ground level, but is likely to rise and dissipate into the atmosphere as it warms up.   Find out more on what we could expect in the event of an LNG spill and how a response can be mounted in our report below and on our website 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQzei5_Q   #cleanenergy #marineenergy #pollution

We’re at Convenor - Oil Spill India in New Delhi where, today Jamie Stovin-Bradford is speaking on how an increased digital adaptability can enhance spill response efficiency and earlier in the day David Campion contributed to the Open Plenary panel session which focused on developments in global, regional and national oil spill preparedness and response. Tomorrow, David will be speaking about about a recent case study of a pollution event in the Asia-Pacific region. We are also demonstrating our Mixed-Reality spill response application with Marie Lee at our booth location of A12, feel free to swing by and say hello. #OSI #OilSpillIndia #maritime #shipping #pollution
