I always thought recruiters had to charge a percentage of salary. It’s the industry standard, right? Something everyone just accepts. But when you think about it… doesn’t this model push recruiters to focus on the most expensive candidates? And then cross our fingers that clients add an extra £5-10k to the offer, giving us a nice bump in fees? I remember one chat with a founder that really made me see the problem: this approach doesn’t truly align the client and recruiter. In fact, it can breed distrust. So, we changed our model. We moved our retained work to fixed fees. Now, we agree on a price upfront - both sides know the investment, and we get on with the job of finding the right talent, not just the highest-priced. The result? One client saved £20k across six hires. And the feedback we’re getting from clients speaks volumes about how much they value the shift. It makes me wonder - what else in recruitment are we all blindly accepting that might need a rethink? I’m sure you’ve got some ideas – comments and DMs welcome!
