ISAC is a federation of member societies aimed at combating antibiotic resistance around the world.
About us
The International Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ISAC) aims to advance the education and the science of therapy of infection through the establishment of an international federation of affiliated national and regional societies with similar aims and objectives to its own. ISAC currently has a worldwide membership composed of 95 national and regional societies, which in turn have over 50,000 individual members. ISAC promotes the conduct of scientific research, convening international congresses, conferences and symposia and encourages co-operation within the society and between scientists belonging to other societies dealing with related basic and clinical sciences. In the last decade, most of the Society's work has been on antimicrobials. ISAC currently has 22 Working Groups and actively encourages and/or sponsors the formation of international working groups for special research, training projects or the use of therapeutics in the field of anti-infective and anti-neoplastic therapy and coordinating their activities. The Working Groups contribute significantly to the ISAC Disease Management Series of meetings. In addition, the ISAC awards scholarships and bursaries to enable attendance at and travel to its international biennial congresses. The Society’s official journals are the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (IJAA) and the Journal of Global Antimicrobial Resistance (JGAR). ISAC hosts the International Congress of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ICC) worldwide every second year. 📢Call for papers | IJAA One-Health Special Issue The deadline to submit papers for the next special issue in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents (IJAA) is fast approaching. One-Health Special Issue Guest Editors: Dr Reema Singh and Prof. Yonghong Xiao Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant and pressing global threat that arises from the inappropriate use of antimicrobials in humans, plants, food animals, and the environment. The development of AMR is further exacerbated by the circulation of resistant organisms within healthcare environments. To effectively address the issue of AMR, it is essential to adopt a comprehensive and collaborative approach that emphasises the interconnectedness of the environment, animals, and humans. This approach is commonly referred to as the “One-Health” approach. The International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents is currently accepting submissions for a special issue that focuses on AMR in a One-Health context. This issue will cover multiple disciplines, and we invite contributions from experts in both academia and industry. We are seeking original research, review articles, and short communications for this virtual special issue. The following areas are of particular interest: • AMR in human and animal disease-causing pathogens; • Epidemiology and transmission of resistant pathogens in the environment (i.,e soil, water, air); • One-health integrated surveillance and management of AMR; • One-health interventions to control AMR. Deadline: 10 August 2024 Find out more on the website⬇ https://lnkd.in/epsr5nYE #Onehealth #clinicalmicro #healthcare #antibioticresistance #antibiotics #antimicrobialstewardship #antimicrobialresistance #antimicrobials #clinicalmicrobiology #globalhealth #publichealth #viralinfection #Zoonoses #agriculture #livestock #aquaculture #environmental #wastewater

On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, we are sharing this excellent e-module developed by the ISAC Viral Infections Working Group and produced by our colleagues at Page Medical. Hepatitis C Virus: Tackling this infection with Direct Acting Antivirals The course is aimed at early career healthcare professionals interested in learning more about HCV, including hepatologists and other prescribing clinicians, medical microbiologists, virologists, nurses and lab technicians. Course Aims The course is aimed at early career healthcare professionals interested in learning more about HCV, including hepatologists and other prescribing clinicians, medical microbiologists, virologists, nurses and lab technicians. You will start by learning about HCV including the structure of the virus, the epidemiology and clinical presentation. You will then explore HCV coinfection before moving on to learn about treatment methods and reasons why treatment may fail, such as antimicrobial resistance. Lastly, you will learn about occult HCV and the risks this type of infection poses to patients. You will also have the opportunity to follow and discuss two case studies as the course progresses. By the end of this course you will be able to... * Identify Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) structure * Explain HCV coinfection * Classify Direct Acting Antivirals (DAAs) for HCV * Explain causes of HCV treatment failure * Discuss mechanisms of HCV resistance to DAAs * Define occult HCV * Discuss pathophysiology of occult HCV * Explain diagnosis and importance of occult HCV Sign up for free ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eSBhXgid #WorldHepatitisDay #Hepatitis #viralinfections #HepC #virology #infection #infectiousdisease #antivirals #globalhealth #publichealth #healthcare #heptology #microbiology Page Medical Hannah Stewart The World Hepatitis Alliance World Hepatitis Alliance

🎥On-demand | S. Aureus webinar In case you missed ISAC's recent webinar on "Antibiotic susceptibility patterns used for epidemiologic surveillance of S. aureus" you can watch it again on-demand. Thank you to the excellent speakers and to the ISAC MRSA Working Group for organising the webinar. It was very successful with over 500 registrants from over 100 countries. There have been recent studies in the US and Spain showing emerging resistance in MSSA to macrolides and to tetracyclines. ST398 S. aureus strains, initially identified as “livestock associated MRSA” are a fascinating example. Studies of clinical S. aureus strains have in some cases included molecular epidemiology suggesting that ST398 S. aureus strains may be responsible for a change in the relative prevalence of strains causing clinically significant disease. Other studies have examined national or transnational emergence of various increasingly common strains of MRSA and MSSA, using susceptibility patterns to track strain emergence or change over time. Listen to this webinar and hear from three experts in the field on these topics. 🌟New review in IJAA 🌟 Clinical and laboratory insights into the threat of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (Han et al) Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) typically causes severe invasive infections affecting multiple sites in healthy individuals. In the past, hvKP was characterized by a hypermucoviscosity phenotype, susceptibility to antimicrobial agents, and its tendency to cause invasive infections in healthy individuals within the community. However, there has been an alarming increase in reports of multidrug-resistant hvKP, particularly carbapenem-resistant strains, causing nosocomial infections in critically ill or immunocompromised patients. This presents a significant challenge for clinical treatment. Early identification of hvKP is crucial for timely infection control. Notably, identifying hvKP has become confusing due to its prevalence in nosocomial settings and the limited predictive specificity of the hypermucoviscosity phenotype. Novel virulence predictors for hvKP have been discovered through animal models or machine learning algorithms, while standardization of identification criteria is still necessary. Timely source control and antibiotic therapy have been widely employed for the treatment of hvKP infections. Additionally, phage therapy is a promising alternative approach due to escalating antibiotic resistance. In summary, this narrative review highlights the latest research progress in the development, virulence factors, identification, epidemiology of hvKP, and treatment options available for hvKP infection.
