"COVID-19 showed us that all countries need health system resilience, which includes resilient R&D systems. We must stop viewing endemic & pandemic diseases in competition. If we can't do the small things, we will never do the big things"- Mona Nemer, #100DaysMission Steering Group Chair at #GPPS2024's closing plenary 👏

The International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat (IPPS) supports the delivery of the 100 Days Mission.
About us
The International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat (IPPS) is an independent and time-limited entity that supports the delivery of the 100 Days Mission (100DM). The 100DM aims to prepare as much as possible so that within the first 100 days of a pandemic threat being identified, there is the availability of accurate and approved rapid diagnostic tests, an initial regimen of therapeutics, and vaccines ready to be produced at scale, that are safe, effective and affordable. The IPPS is hosted by the Wellcome Trust, and its activities include - Keeping pandemic preparedness high on the agenda; - Catalysing scientific exchange; - Facilitating multidisciplinary engagement; - Producing annual reports to support prioritisation efforts by partners. The Steering Group (SG) provides oversight and accountability for the IPPS’s work. Its members include the Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, WHO, G7 and G20 Presidencies, the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) and it is chaired by Dr Mona Nemer, Canada's Chief Science Advisor. The Science and Technology Expert Group (STEG) provides technical input to the IPPS. Reporting to the SG, it delivers an assurance function for the annual report against the 100DM recommendations and galvanises support from the scientific community on pandemic preparedness through meetings, working groups, and assessments. “We can stop the next pandemic, but only if we act now” “It is only a matter of time before the next virus comes for us, with potentially even more devastating effects. That is why the world must act now to establish a robust preparedness and response system, enabling us to head off future infectious disease outbreaks faster and more equitably.” — Richard Hatchett and Mario Moreira writing in The Telegraph READDI is helping lead a global #therapeuticscoalition to prepare for the next highly contagious viral outbreak. 🦠 New Pathogen Diagnostic Readiness Index (PDxRI)! Alongside OneTandem, we are pleased to announce the launch of our Pathogen Diagnostic Readiness Index, revealing alarming gaps in global diagnostic readiness for pandemic threats. Currently, SARS-CoV-2 is the only pathogen with adequate diagnostic preparedness. Urgent investments in diagnostics R&D and regulatory improvements are crucial to closing these gaps. The PDxRI highlights the need for rapid, reliable tests to safeguard global health security. The time is now to enhance our diagnostic capabilities and prevent future pandemics. 🌍 Check out the index here: https://lnkd.in/eiQUUKNv #PandemicPreparedness #GlobalHealth #DiagnosisForAll

Carmen Pérez Casas at #GPPS2024 stresses that "access must not be an afterthought." To ensure equitable access, we must prioritize early product development and efficient scaling. A strong pre-pandemic pipeline with phase 2-ready candidates is essential for a rapid response.

Dr. Ruxandra Draghia-Akli at #GPPS2024 emphasized that antiviral development needs more than new drugs. It demands a comprehensive ecosystem: surveillance, diagnosis, vaccines, vector control, and public education. Each element is vital for effectively combating viral threats.

"There is significant progress in optimising vaccine production. But there are only 4 priority pathogens with approved diagnostics & the therapeutics pipeline is underdeveloped. Both lack funding & coordination"- Victor Dzau opens the #GPPS2024 panel 'The importance of end-to-end coordination mechanisms' ⬇ "Taking the lessons learnt from CEPI, it is key for MCM mechanisms to have: -incentives for private sector partners -R&D funding that is not dilutive -procurement mechanisms lined up -access by design -agile & fast governance designed to deliver" - Richard Hatchett, CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) "Fast, equitably distributed diagnostics are essential to spot & stem an emerging pandemic. FIND have a partnership-driven, 5-year roadmap for diagnostic readiness to achieve the #100DaysMission. But this requires $100 million in seed funding"- Marta Fernández Suárez, FIND "We need a pipeline with 2 phase 2 ready candidates & platform tools, to support WHO R&D blueprint families, quickly put into clinical trials and manufacturing to achieve the 100-day target. A Therapeutics development coalition will help us achieve this" - Carmen Pérez Casas, Unitaid "A Therapeutic coalition needs a collaborative and open approach, with a geographically diverse range of partners, and to have access in the very early beginning" - Dr Luis Pizarro, Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative - DNDi "We need sustained investment, cooperation, coordination & billions of dollars to make the #100DaysMission Therapeutics roadmap implementable. Following the WHO blueprint strategy, we can move forward collaboratively with a Therapeutics coalition"- Ruxandra Draghia Akli, MD, PhD, INTREPID Alliance
