A society-owned scientific publisher, providing impact, recognition and value for the scientific community

About us

We work closely with researchers, librarians, and partners worldwide to produce academic journals, books and conference series. Our aim is to cover the latest and best research in the physical sciences and beyond. As a subsidiary of the Institute of Physics, any surplus made by IOP Publishing goes directly to the Institute to assist their mission to help everyone build their knowledge of physics and to provide professional support for physicists. IOP Publishing supports global schemes such as INASP and EIFL to promote the dissemination of and engagement with science in developing and transition countries. We provide a range of services to help the scientific community register, validate, edit, disseminate, preserve and maximise the discoverability and authority of their research. These services include: developing novel and innovative journals to meet new community needs; managing peer review; archiving and preserving content; hosting and distributing research online; enabling the discovery of published research; introducing new tools and systems to help authors demonstrate the impact of their work; and publicising journal papers and their authors. IOP Publishing is a strong supporter of open science and open access to scientific research. A pioneer in open access publishing in physics, we launched the first fully open access journal in physics, New Journal of Physics, with the Institute of Physics and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft in 1998. Since then, we have launched several new fully open access journals. In addition, we have introduced open access publishing options for authors in our conventional subscription journals. IOP Publishing combines the values of a scholarly society with the technical expertise and efficiency of a substantial global publisher. Part of the scientific community, we work in close collaboration with our authors, readers, institutions, librarians and partners to ensure that what we do always serves their needs.

🎉 Today's record rise in students taking A-level #Physics is fantastic news for young people and society. This year's 12% increase takes us back to levels not seen since the 1990s, which is fantastic news, not just for young people themselves but for our society and economy. ❗ However, it remains deeply concerning that despite the welcome overall rise in numbers taking A-level physics there is only a small increase in the proportion of candidates who are girls, rising from 22.9% to 23.3% of this year’s total. We still need to acknowledge that girls are still much less likely to pursue physics than boys and continue to tackle this gap. Physics is only the 15th most popular subject amongst girls (and second amongst boys) and IOP research shows that too many girls, and other young people from underrepresented groups, are put off by outdated stereotypes. We must do more to show that whoever you are, wherever you come from, physics can be for you. We must also take action to close the estimated 3,500 physics teacher gap across England, by recruiting, retraining and retaining specialist physics teachers to ensure that all young people have the opportunity of a high-quality physics education. And, alongside A-levels, we must continue to encourage uptake of high-quality technical routes such as T-levels that unlock rewarding opportunities in further study, training, and employment. This means taking action on some of the barriers preventing large-scale T-level take-up, such as a shortage of industry placements, which many employers tell us they find too complicated. https://lnkd.in/dbXrTEQC

It's time to unleash your quantum quandaries! If you have questions about matters of the universe, join us to celebrate the 90th birthday of Reports on Progress in Physics (ROPP), where we'll be hosting some of the brightest minds in Physics at a 2-day event in London. This year’s Progress In Physics event will be unravelling the secrets of condensed matter. As one of the most diverse fields in physics we aim to shed more light on how matter works. Join us in London (or online) on the 9-10th October. Why should you attend? • Stay ahead of the curve: Get exclusive access to the latest breakthroughs in condensed matter physics. The speakers of the event include global experts working at the forefront of the subject matter. • Scientific collaboration: By attending, you’re contributing to global scientific cooperation. With some of the brightest minds in condensed matter together, you’ll connect with fellow scientists, researchers and industry experts. Share ideas, collaborate on projects and expand your professional circle. • Present your poster: join the discussion by presenting your latest research in a poster. The stuff that matters: • Dates: 9-10 October • Time: 9.00am – 5.00pm • Location: Institute of Physics, London (or join us online!) • Ticket: £40 early bird rate (before 28th August 2024) Come and discover the latest science news whilst we celebrate 90 years since ROPP's big bang!
