🔔 Just Out 🙌 2024 World LNG Report: Despite lower price, the growing global LNG market stays tight amid supply constraints. Get your copy 👉 https://igu.org/. 🔹 Global LNG trade grew by 2.1% in 2023. This global market now connects 20 exporting with 51 importing markets - available supply was the only limiting factor of growth. 🔹 2023 saw spot LNG prices declining to levels palatable for recovery of import growth in #Asia. #China came back as the largest LNG importer at 71.19 MT, #Japan and #Korea remained second and third despite annual declines, and #India came back to the fourth position, with more demand responding to the lower spot price. #Europe also cemented its role as an LNG importing heavyweight, maintaining the second-largest importing region spot in 2023. 🔹 Several major uncertainties confront the supply-constrained market, contributing the fragility of its current equilibrium. Key sources of this uncertainty include: the Biden Administration non-FTA LNG project approvals pause; sanctions on Russian LNG; the possibility that Ukraine may not extend the Russian gas transit deal at the end of 2024; shipyard bottlenecks; the ongoing security risk in the Middle East; as well as some declining gas field supply. 🔹 The Global LNG Market continues to rapidly evolve as it responds to growing gas demand in emerging markets, increasing number and diversification of market participants, and the acceleration of technology development and innovation. Huge thanks to the brilliant group of experts from the IGU LNG Committee for their incredible insight and contributions to make the report possible - they are a big group ! It was a pleasure to continue to collaborate with the S&P Global Commodity Insights and Rystad Energy. Natural gas is expected to fill an ongoing role in a secure global energy future, but producers are, at the same time, expected to strive for continuous improvement in their environmental performance and provide greater transparency surrounding the impact natural gas has on the environment. In recent years, this has translated into a growing movement to certify gas on its emission footprint. In some cases, producers are opting for more than one certification process. Read to learn more in the GVG's interview with Georges Tijbosch and Jon Olson, as we are continuing to share great pieces from the March issue of the #GlobalVoiceofGas, as we are warming up the digital presses for the July edition. ➡️ 🚢 LNG Imports by Market: IGU World LNG Report 2024 Japan lost the top spot to China but remained the second-largest importer. South Korea maintained its position as the third-largest importer. Both markets experienced similar dynamics in 2023, with increased availability of coal and nuclear generation capacities, serving as alternatives to LNG. India rose to become the fourth-largest importer, driven by prices falling below $10 per MMBtu, which attracted many Indian importers back to the spot market. France dropped to the fifth-largest importer due to higher availability of competing power sources such as nuclear and renewables, reducing the need for LNG. I had an old 3D model of an LNG tank stored in my cloud, so I decided to repurpose it to create infographics in the Visual Capitalist style, in time with the release of the International Gas Union 2024 World LNG Report. (I haven't finished absorbing all the data yet, expect more infographics). High-Resolution Download ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gznJA8Hc #LNG #IGU #LNGtrade #VisualCapitalist #Infographics

As we finalise the new issue of the #GlobalVoiceOfGas magazine, we look back to the previous edition's great interview with Osam Iyahen of Africa Finance Corporation, an associate member of the IGU, a fully African-owned & financed multilateral development bank, with a focus on infrastructure and #energyaccess. To sign-up for the next edition of the magazine, or to find out about membership go to 👉 www.igu.org 🎙 Energy security and accessibility is critical for rapid industrialization and economic growth in Africa. 🎙 Unfortunately, Africa lags behind the rest of the world in terms of energy supply, with over 50% of the population without power. 🎙Africa also has the youngest population with around 40% of the population aged 15 years and younger. 🎙The lack of available and reliable energy supply has largely stymied the growth of the continent’s youth and productivity where demand has been increasing at the highest rate amongst all continents (~3% p.a.). 🎙Oil and natural #gas exploitation will keep dominating Africa’s energy mix. However, the continent has the largest untapped hydropower potential in the world with only 11% of this potential being utilized. It is the main source of renewable energy in Africa with 37 GW of installed capacity. There is also significant potential for the other #renewables - #solar, #bioenergy, #wind, #geothermal energy- to contribute to a more balanced energy mix on the continent. 🎙#Africa has the highest combined solar and wind potential of any region in the world. It just takes innovative investment structures to realise the potential. 🎙To achieve net zero by 2050, Africa would need an estimated US$2.8 trillion of domestic and global capital invested. This funding challenge is coupled with perception of investment risk on the continent, even though it has been acknowledged that project finance defaults on the continent are the lowest globally. 🎙Another bottleneck is the interface with largely financially distressed state utilities, unable to afford the capital investment and system strengthening required. 🎙The impact of the intermittences of renewable systems can also not be ignored. #Solar energy is challenged by the rainy season and the sun cycles, whereas wind energy is more easily accessible at night. 🎙For a continent grappling with the urgency of industrialisation requiring reliable baseload power supply, energy transition efforts with the intermittent renewable systems are not a sufficient solution. The legal block of the US ban on LNG export permits to non-FTA countries is a positive development for the #LNG market and for global energy security, emissions reduction, and affordability. As we highlighted in the released last week 2024 World LNG report 👉 https://lnkd.in/eyyPhZGw , the ban has added to uncertainty in a tight market and could impact 70 mtpa of capacity. The US is the world’s largest LNG exporter, and has revolutionised the global gas market, supercharging its liberalisation by introducing great commercial flexibility in trade and contracts. The functioning of a flexible global gas market made it possible to keep the world’s energy system above water during the worst energy crisis in memory. Having open, flexible, transparent, competitive, and reliable gas markets is imperative to ensuring the success of the global energy transition and safeguarding international energy security, while markets provide the best counterbalance to the politicisation of energy supply. https://lnkd.in/eubkj6ay. #ongt Mel ( Menelaos) Ydreos, Tatiana Khanberg, Paddy Blewer, Neill Tannock, Canadian Gas Association, Didier Holleaux, Khaled Abubakr, Carlos Cortes Simon, Amir Foster, Marcel Kramer, Satoshi Yoshida, Mehdy Touil

International Gas Union reposted this
🛠➡️ 60 Years of LNG: Global Liquefaction Capacity from 1964 to 2024 Our industry will soon celebrate 60 years since the export of the first commercial cargo of LNG from the baseload CAMEL plant in Arzew, Algeria. On October 12, 1964, the Methane Princess, the world’s first ship specifically designed for LNG trade, delivered the inaugural commercial LNG cargo to the UK’s Canvey Island regasification terminal. Over six decades, the sector has expanded from this single trade between Algeria and the UK, surpassing 400 million tonnes of LNG traded last year. From Algeria's dominance until 2002, through the significant contributions of Malaysia and Nigeria soon after, Qatar's phenomenal rise, followed by Australia's leadership, and the shale revolution that positioned the US as the top LNG exporter, our industry has undergone tremendous transformation. These changes have been driven by opportunities, innovation, and sometimes uncertainties, but most importantly, by the resilience of the people who have shaped our industry over sixty years. A big thank you to the International Gas Union for the timely release of the World LNG Report 2024. 🎬 video download https://lnkd.in/gfkQPTmF #LNG #LNGtrade #liquefaction #LNGindustry
