Clean Currents has arrived in Portland, Oregon! While the Oregon Convention Center is getting prepared to welcome the nearly 2,000 registrants, the attendees who arrived early are already jumping into the festivities. This morning, more than 50(!) cyclists and water power enthusiasts gathered for a group ride down to Oregon City, hugging the Willamette and Clackamas rivers, before reaching a stunning overlook of Portland General Electric's T.W. Sullivan Hydroelectric Project. Thank you to Kleinschmidt Associates for providing incredible jersey's for the ride! In the afternoon, students and companies alike took part in a #CleanEnergy career expo at Portland State University, where university students learned about the many promising careers in #WaterPower. Hydropower Foundation, who organized the career fair, understands the importance of developing the future water power workforce, and events such as the expo shine a necessary spotlight on bountiful opportunities for graduating students.

🌍 An 80 MW hydropower station has transformed the lives of people in Burundi, bringing much-needed stability to vital services. Gitega Hospital, like many others in Burundi, once struggled with unreliable electricity. They relied on costly diesel generators to keep essential equipment running, but this was unsustainable. Staff, like Dr. Ndorukwigira, faced frustrating and often perilous working conditions. Thanks to the steady electricity supply from the Rusumo Dam, the hospital can now focus on what matters most: saving lives. With the upgraded infrastructure, they’ve installed an oxygen production unit that not only meets their own needs but supplies other regional medical centers. New incubators in the neonatal department are permanently connected to electricity, providing life-saving care for premature babies. Dr. Ndorukwigira shared, “We took in a mother who gave birth to premature triplets at six months. Without the continuous electricity for the incubators, we couldn’t have cared for them properly, and they would have probably died. Now the babies are gaining weight, and their mother is very happy.” This isn’t just a win for healthcare. The Rusumo project is also boosting local businesses and households, energizing the region’s economy and empowering communities across Burundi. #WithHydropower Read more: https://lnkd.in/epH5fWDp

Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) and all its members call for an ambitious energy storage target ⚡ 💧 At the Clean Energy Ministerial side event with Mission Innovation in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, the GRA called for a ground breaking 8,000 GW long-duration energy storage target by 2040 and government support for the upcoming #COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge. GRA Chair Julia Souder emphasised that significant storage capacity will ensure grid reliability and IHA board member, Gabriel dos Santos Cruz Rocha, emphasised that pumped storage hydropower comprises 90% of the operational long duration electricity storage globally, but we need to accelerate its development to support the renewable energy surge and ensure grid reliability.
