Cooling as a critical strategy for climate adaption Really pleased to publish our report - The Hot Reality: Living in a 50°C World exploring the role of cooling in adapting to rising ambient temperatures and strategies to build resilience sustainably. With more than a year of research and debate, workshops and high-level roundtables, and contributions from more than 35 subject matter experts around the globe, the report shows why governments and policy makers need to recognise cooling as critical national infrastructure (CNI) if we are to build resilience to the impact of climate change. It includes a first set of key recommendations for government, industry and academia. As a living programme - and key pillar of our work, especially in India and Africa as well as UK and Europe - looking forward to discussing the findings, recommendations and building further exchange of insights at the IMECHE this afternoon with two events. Further international events planned for later this year. Big thank you to Tim Fox and all the contributors and peer reviewers for making this project possible and launching it with such an in-depth body of work. news story - https://lnkd.in/gVGEAjkx reports - https://lnkd.in/gDw_bPM8

The Institute of Refrigeration has been invited to take part in an industry round table discussion as part of this event. Looking forward to sharing how cooling experts from the IOR can contribute to this important work to recognise refrigeration as part of the critical national infrastructure to address climate change. Would welcome input from IOR members on their thoughts on priorities - read the IOR paper published as part of the Environment Audit Committee inquiry into Extreme Heat and Sustainable Cooling earlier this year at https://lnkd.in/gPz9Ma-e #refrigeration #rachp #sustainablecooling #extremeheat #adaptation2025

On Thursday July 18th 2024 University of Birmingham's Centre for Sustainable Cooling (CSC) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) will be holding a joint event in London to mark the publication of “The Hot Reality: Living in a 50°C World – Cooling as critical infrastructure to survive and thrive.”. This landmark report, authored by Dr Tim Fox and written contributions from more than 35 subject matter experts and their team colleagues worldwide, examines: · the impact of rising ambient seasonal temperatures and more frequent, prolonged and intense heatwaves on humans and a broad range of essential services upon which we rely to survive and thrive; · the key role that clean cooling has in helping humanity to adapt to a hotter world and build resilience; · the case for governments across the globe to recognise that cooling systems are critical national infrastructure and the risks associated with not doing so. The publication launch of this broad ranging report will take place at IMechE’s Headquarters, located at 1 Birdcage Walk, London, SW1 9JJ, commencing at 6.15pm (attendee registration from 5.45pm) for a presentation and discussion and will be followed by an evening drinks reception. Attendance is by invitation only and places are limited. Please email me [email protected] is you would like to join us at this exciting and timely event.
