A lovely moment to end the working week on... Arron Rodrigues spotted a video on BBC News and shared it with the team. This led to a great conversation about the work we did with arena to create record-breaking swimsuits. Our application of fundamental science resulted in next generation competition suits. The first suit developed by the collaboration debuted in the 2009 World Championships in Rome. arena won more gold medals, and broke more world records than ever before. It’s not every day you get to jump in the pool with an Olympic swimmer, but for our BBC Click sport special I got to do just that. Honey Osrin will be competing in her first Olympics in Paris this summer and I joined her to explore the latest innovations in swim suit tech. These are highly engineered bits of kit costing hundreds of pounds 🏊♂️ Designed to compress the body and ensure the swimmer is streamline through the water 🏊♀️ Groves in the design channel water away from the body to prevent vortices. 💧 The latest material is designed to absorb less water, and not drag the swimmer down. All of this is engineered within strict rules that govern what materials can be used, how much of the body a suit covers and where seams can be placed. But as Greg Steyger from manufacturer Arena told me, the industry is always finding ways to innovate.
