Nana Marfo is an advocate for improving the rights of individuals with disabilities. Aka “Mr Unique Voice”, his trachea tube enables him to both breathe and speak his truth of equality. Being born extremely premature affected the development of Nana's windpipe, resulting in the need to have a tracheostomy. This made speech difficult. Being voiceless as a child had an impact on his growth, both mentally and emotionally, and left him feeling invisible. 200 subsequent surgeries have been required to maintain his health and it took him a long-time to accept and understand his condition. ⭐ Being Black, disabled and from a Muslim family were intersectional layers of identity that brought multiple challenges and barriers for him as he was growing up. ⭐ Personally experiencing incidents of discrimination and injustice in the workplace, and speaking out about this, made him first realise the power of advocacy and has motivated him to become a voice for others. ⭐ In 2017, he founded the organisation Unique Abilities, a platform which gives people with disabilities a space to speak out on employment issues and how they feel in the workplace. It strives towards ending the stigma around disabilities and instead celebrate the ways in which we are all unique. ⭐ He has pushed for reform through his freelance work with the charity Scope and also through writing articles for the Independent. ⭐ In 2018, Nana was nominated for a national diversity award. By reporting pay gap data, companies reflect their commitment to social responsibility, ensuring vulnerable groups are not left behind and that their contributions are being recognised and rewarded equitably. Building on the success of gender pay gap reporting, the new 'Equality (Race and Disability) Bill', proposed last week in the King's Speech, aims to make disability and ethnicity pay gap reporting mandatory for large employers, enshrining the full right to equal pay for both groups too. Data from the ONS shows that both disabled people and people from ethnic minorities earn less on average than their non-disabled and white peers respectively. Mandatory reporting could make it easier for people to bring an unequal pay claim, and also expose other pay disparities and encourage positive action from employers. ⏸️ We're not there yet, however. There are still hurdles to overcome for this bill to be introduced. Creating reports based on those who are disabled, which is a complex spectrum, and race with numerous race and ethnic groupings would not only be very complicated but might be much harder to produce a meaningful report which can be used to make meaningful comparisons and indicating true disparity rather than accidentally reporting false positive or negative outcomes. #PayGapReporting #DisabilityPayGap #EthnicityPayGap #PayGap #KingsSpeech #equity #equality #EqualPay ** please see comments below for alt text **
