Regular testing and inspection of steam traps are crucial to avoid potential steam waste and improve safety and productivity. Failure detection is relatively easy if a steam trap fails in the open position, as it allows live steam to pass into the condensate recovery line or drain. A pluming condensate recovery unit or hot well vent then acts as an obvious warning. If a steam trap fails in the closed position, the steam trap output is not fed into a condensate recovery line, and detection becomes difficult. Hence, using the correct equipment to monitor steam trap performance regularly is always advisable. Before working with IMI, Griffith Energy typically spent well over $100,000 annually to rebuild its boiler feedwater control valves to accommodate operational wear and maintain high levels of availability and reliability. IMI DRAG® variants were suggested as a potential solution, but this full upgrade would require board approval for capex, as well as for welding, non-destructive examination, cleaning of piping, a new spare parts inventory, drawing and manual updates. With scope, cost and timespan taken into consideration, we worked with them to design new trim sets using additive manufacturing, avoiding unnecessary expense and minimising maintenance downtime. Sometimes it can be easy to overlook the impact of certain product designs, especially if they go on to become an industry standard. DRAG® technology was developed in 1967 to address the problem of how to control high pressure drops in control valves. It has since gone on to define the principles for velocity and fluid kinetic energy control across many different sectors. See how we're still using DRAG® technology in our valves today. Since being introduced by IMI in 2019, Erosolve Wet Steam has been installed in over 200 power and process plants across the globe. Wet steam presents a particular challenge for power and process plant managers, forming when saturated steam and condensate water molecules combine. Failure to control wet steam can lead to the erosion of critical valve trim components, causing safety hazards and substantial operational inefficiencies, which can ultimately lead to costly unplanned downtime.
