Our biotechnologies enable more sustainable chemical synthesis and manufacturing by replacing toxic, heavy-metal catalysts, operating under mild reaction conditions, minimising waste and operating in continuous flow. HydRegen is a spinout company from the Department of Chemistry (University of Oxford), commercialising a biotechnology from the group of Prof. Kylie Vincent.

    📈 Our Impact Strategy on Cost and Carbon Savings 🔬 With new data, comes new opportunities for modelling the transformative impact that our biotechnologies can have on the chemicals sector. Over the last year, we have been able to more rigorously validate our models with intensified processes, improved data and top-tier expert consultants.  The result?  A predicted 3x CO2e reduction, on average, if HydRegen technologies are used to replace metal catalysts in commercial hydrogenation manufacturing processes.  Our modelling compares moving hydrogenations from batch to continuous flow, and then from metal-based to HydRegen's bio-based strategies. Importantly, our sustainability and cost savings are directly aligned, and largely centre on minimising energy demands.  💥 Watch this space as there is much more to come as we model our more streamlined downstream processing requirements and review other indirect manufacturing benefits.     ❓ At HydRegen, ‘we make biology work like chemistry’, but what do we mean by that? ❓  🧪 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆: the process of changing a substance from one form to another – i.e. when making a chemical product.    Many chemical processes rely on catalysts to activate chemical change, especially if that change is energy-intensive. Chemists can use precious or toxic metal-catalysts like tin, palladium and platinum. It’s ideal for intensified manufacturing of chemical compounds. But not great for the environment.    🌿 Biocatalysis, on the other hand, is the use of Nature’s catalytsts, enzymes, to enabling chemical changes under mild conditions.      It uses less energy, is more selective and fits better within a circular economy.  The downside is these bio-based processes tend to be operated at lower intensity, forming high levels of carbon-based waste and ultimately fail to meet economic viability.
