Mohammed Zaman arrived in London from Bangladesh in 2005 with a visa and a job, but fell victim to modern slavery. He had a sponsor, but Mr Zaman’s passport was taken away until after his visa had expired, making him a forced overstayer in the UK. Having recently been given permission to stay, he hopes to bear the famous torch ahead of the Paralympics next month. Read more about this impactful story here: https://lnkd.in/e8jc49gH

Hope for Justice strongly endorses the DEFIANCE Act – new legislation which has passed unanimously through the U.S. Senate – which empowers victims of non-consensual AI deepfakes to sue those who created them. The bipartisan Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act (DEFIANCE) Act enables victims of sexually explicit deepfakes to pursue civil remedies against those who “knowingly produce, distribute, or receive” them. The facts in this piece by The Independent are shocking but sadly they are reflective of the difficulties we see survivors face in accessing compensation. At Hope for Justice, survivors we help have had to wait years for outcomes in CICA cases and positive outcomes are rare without intensive advocacy and legal representation, which sadly isn't always available for every survivor. Thank you to After Exploitation for bringing these figures to light and to Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner Eleanor Lyons for speaking out about this issue. More must be done to ensure that survivors of modern slavery have fair access to compensation. #CICA #CICS #Compensation #ModernSlavery
