About us

The Home-Start network consists of Home-Start UK and 180 affiliated local Home-Starts. Together they form the Home-Start service, delivering one-to-one support, friendship and practical help to families with young children.. Home-Start UK All local Home-Starts are supported by Home-Start UK. Home-Start UK is an independently registered charity that provides the support that local Home-Starts need to carry out their family support work through: up-to-date training for staff, volunteers and trustees; information and guidance on governance; legal and human resources advice; help with fundraising; lobbying of national and local government and funders; running volunteer recruitment campaigns; providing national quality standards; supporting community groups to set up new local Home-Starts and representing Home-Start on national, regional and local fora. Local Home-Starts (schemes) Each local Home-Start is an independently registered charity that supports local families in exactly the way that is needed in its local community. Each local Home-Start is set up and run by people from the local area, and is responsible for raising all its own funds. The (usually) small local staff team recruits and trains local volunteers and carefully matches them with local families who need support. Each local Home-Start is managed by a board of volunteer trustees. The constitution of a local Home-Start is based on a nationally agreed model, adapted for local circumstances.

⭐𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀! ⭐ 𝗛𝗶𝗕 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 Home-Start UK 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿! After surpassing our first-year goals and raising an impressive £25,872.50 to support vulnerable families, we’ve kicked off this next chapter with a £20,000 donation. 🧡 Home-Start reaches 78,000 children across the UK, helping families facing isolation, bereavement, illness, and more. Thanks to our amazing team at HiB, we’ve directly supported 489 families through fundraising events and volunteering! 👏 The funds raised so far could have a significant impact, potentially enabling the recruitment and training of 539 additional Home-Start volunteers. With each volunteer supporting an average of six families, HiB’s donation alone could help provide essential support to over 3,000 families. We can’t wait to see what we achieve together this year! 💙 Click https://lnkd.in/dA3G3HrT to find out more ⬅️

⚽ This #NationalPlayDay, together with Home-Start UK, we’ve launched a new ‘Inclusive Play’ course to support thousands of families with young and neurodiverse children across the UK. 🖌 The course is full of expert guidance and practical advice, developed alongside researchers at PEDAL centre of research for Play in Education, Development and Learning at the University of Cambridge - including input from the LEGO Group Professor of Play, Paul Ramchandani. 🎲 90% of Home-Start volunteers felt that some parents struggle to play with their child, and 99% believe that play is fundamental to helping a child build emotional bonds and connections with their parents and with others. 🥁 Through this new course, we’re aiming to upskill 4,000 volunteers to help families use play to support children’s learning and development, laying the foundations that will last a lifetime. 💚 We launched the award-winning Healthy Happy Home upskilling programme in 2022 with essential e-learning courses, which have already helped more than 6,000 volunteers better support families with food and nutrition, sleep, and financial wellbeing. #InclusivePlay #HealthyHappyHome #DrivenByPurpose

    Chief Executive at Home-Start UK

Childhood should be the most joyful moment and it is a tragedy Bebe, Elsie and Alice will never enjoy growing up. Home-Start UK's heart and thoughts are with the families of these young girls and the wider community impacted by this terrible trauma. Our gratitude goes to colleagues and volunteers at HOME-START SOUTHPORT & FORMBY working tirelessly to support families at this difficult time - seeking to create some sense of normality for children in the community. As this tragedy is used as an excuse by those seeking to create fear and division, Home-Start UK stands alongside all communities seeking tolerance and compassion at this time and in solidarity with colleagues and friends – particularly global majority families and those who have settled in this country - who have been made to feel scared and unsafe in their own communities. At Home-Start, we stand by those leading with empathy to unite against ignorance, violence and hate. All children deserve a safe childhood and Home-Start will continue to play our part in building compassionate communities for all families and children.

AJ & Curtis are on the penultimate stop of their charity spotlight tour, volunteering with Teachappy Ltd at Home-Start UK Watford and Three Rivers. The brothers met Adrian Bethune, founder of #Teachappy, who are committed to promoting mental health through evidence-based practices. Adrian faced his own mental health challenges post-graduation and his recovery journey led him to the ‘science of happiness.’ Adrian has a strong belief in the power of volunteering and Teachappy’s chosen charity is Home-Start, whose mission is to recruit and train local volunteers to support families facing various challenges. Many Home-Starts are involved with their local Family Hubs. We believe it is vital that funding is continued so that the important work & relationship building done by local communities isn't lost. Read the cross-sector statement here: bit.ly/46fGNBb

The Start for Life and Family Hubs programme currently provides dedicated central government funding to 75 local authorities for both research-based, high-quality early years services and a joining-up of services for families from pregnancy through to 19 (and 25 in some cases). Along with a number of organisations from across the children’s sector, including two major coalitions, and local government bodies, we are urging the new government to maintain funding beyond March 2025, when it is due to end. If funding does end next year, this may mean services that many families only began to access 12 months ago are withdrawn. For local authorities, a crucial plank in their children and families strategies may become unsustainable.  Given the government’s stated aims to “raise the healthiest generation of children ever” and to “break down barriers to opportunity”, we believe as a sector that it would be counterproductive to remove this funding until it has its own clear, longer-term and deliverable early years and family help strategy in place. We're so pleased to support this important initiative. Almost 200,000 children were supported in 2023, by 300 baby banks in the UK. Baby Bank Alliance provide families, babies & children access to the supplies & clothing they need to thrive.

📢 Today marks the official launch of the Baby Bank Alliance! 📢 The Baby Bank Alliance is on a mission to support and advocate for the UK’s baby banks, ensuring babies and children have the essentials they need to thrive. 4.3 million children are living in poverty in the UK, meaning babies and children are lacking the essentials they need to thrive. This is where local baby banks step in. Passing on pre-loved babies and children's items to families in communities. But a local baby bank can't solve this national problem by itself. The Alliance is uniting over 300 baby banks, power comes in our numbers – together we're bringing about bigger change. For the first time, we have gathered data from various baby banks. The new data reveals: ➡ 54.5% increase in referrals between 2021-23, baby banks are inundated with asks for support painting a concerning picture of the state of the nation ➡ Almost 200,000 babies and children were supported by baby banks in 2023, ➡ Baby banks have gifting 1.2million items, worth £27.3 million to tens of thousands of families ➡ provide 99,000 bundles of clothes to keep children warm, over 100,000 books and over 20,000 safe places to sleep. 🌟 Change for children 🌟 Baby banks are about sharing the abundance of preloved items between families, as well as drawing attention to the systemic problems that are leaving families unable to afford essentials. Today, we join calls for the @UK government to abolish the unfair two-child limit, one of the main drivers of rising child poverty in the country. What can people do to help? ·      Get in touch with your local MP and urge them to scrap the two-child limit. ·      Visit the Baby Bank Alliance’s website to find your nearest baby bank and pass on preloved items, volunteer some time or donate money ·      Independent baby banks can join the Baby Bank Alliance for free and be part of a supportive community of hundreds of others across the UK. Visit babybankalliance.org. ·      And of course, if you would like to discuss other ways you might be able to support the Baby Bank Alliance in its mission, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at [email protected] Today marks the beginning of an exciting journey supporting the baby bank community, families and children. With 4.3 million children living in poverty in the UK, and a million of those facing destitution, baby banks have never been needed more. #BabyBankAlliance #supportBabyBanks #EndChildPoverty #SupportFamilies Babybankalliance.org
