Does protecting nature make investment sense? During COP16 Colombia for biological diversity, investors such as Aviva claimed that they expect nature-related action from the private sector to scale more rapidly than climate. We also saw Kering, GSK and Holcim be the first organisations to set verified science-based targets for nature. Despite the COP summit offering no clear path forward for global policymaking and failing to match the decisive conclusion of COP15 two years ago, it is creating momentum within industry. Yesterday I joined UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) conference on Embodied Ecological Impacts. The event showcased that whilst we don't know all the answers for this new topic, which mirrors its sister Embodied Carbon, there is rapidly scaling interest from the built environment sector to minimise the ecological impact well beyond the redline boundary of a site and across value chains. At Hoare Lea we are supporting our clients understand and respond to the risks, opportunities and dependencies they have with nature. Drop me a message if you want to find out how your organisation can benefit from increasing biological diversity.

Congratulations to Principal Engineer Shaun Ellis, who has recently achieved MIMechE CEng.👏 Alongside working on his own professional development, Shaun has been busy developing the IPD Scheme pathway for the Security group, to better support those in their early careers. Earlier this year, this pathway was accredited by the IET, making Hoare Lea the first in the industry to have this recognised support route. Shaun is now working with the professional body, the ‘Register of Security Engineers and Specialists’ (RSES) to help them develop the industry standard competencies! There was optimism and enthusiasm at the UK launch of the 'Serviced Emissions' report this week at The Conduit. The report, a collaborative effort by Race to Zero, Oxford Net Zero and others, provides a framework for how professionals (from engineers and architects to accountants and lawyers) should work with clients to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase accountability for project impacts. The aim is to get consultants to use their influence with clients, to eliminate 'serviced emissions'. These are the greenhouse gas emissions that arise from the advice we give to clients, including emissions from the projects we design and influence. Thought provoking guest speakers included Hugh Montgomery (Hugh M.), professor of medicine at UCL, who said 'If you provide services for those who are destroying us, you are complicit' and Laura Clarke OBE of ClientEarth reminded us 'we all provide climate services in the work we do, whether we like it or not!' This is clearly a call to arms for all professionals to think about the climate impacts of the projects we work on. https://lnkd.in/eqZMuSYe

Our Director of Strategic Growth Andrew Warrack, shares thoughts on yesterday’s Budget: Whilst avoiding straying into the political, I would say that Rachel Reeves first Budget as Chancellor sets a promising tone for growth and investment, something that we welcome. It feels like some time since a government has made credible funding available for capital investment in the country’s built environment and infrastructure but scrutiny reveals challenges that could limit the sector’s ability to capitalise on it. Several aspects stand out that deserve immediate attention. The government’s £5 billion commitment to housing is a substantial boost for the sector: however can this funding be effectively translated into actual homes? Bottlenecks like supply chain constraints, land availability and regulatory hurdles could limit the speed at which this funding turns into real housing stock. On the industrial strategy front, the reiteration of the UK’s ambition around being a Green Energy Superpower and the targeted investment in high-tech sectors like Gigafactories, life sciences, ports, automotive, aeronautics, and film studios paints a dynamic picture of future growth. These sectors are crucial to the UK’s modern, competitive economy and they offer exciting opportunities for construction to play a pivotal role but the challenge lies beyond the funding. Servicing these high-tech fields requires a workforce skilled in advanced and sector-specific technologies. Meeting this need will require focused efforts on skills development which can be lacking in an industry operating on thin margins. The skills gap and training challenges are only intensified by the increase in National Insurance, which puts further strain on an industry already struggling to keep up with other sectors in terms of investment. This could discourage companies from hiring and investing in the talent pipeline, making it even harder to close the skills gap that threatens to stall progress in delivering on the government’s industrial agenda. Hidden in this is an interesting conundrum. To provide the increase in productivity that both the government and our industry crave will take significant inward investment. This in turn will need margins to increase from their frankly unsustainable level; in short clients will need to pay more for their buildings. The Chancellor referred to the Grenfell tragedy in her address, providing increased funding for cladding changes – but to eradicate the corner cutting that claimed so many lives and fund productivity training and AI, more money will be needed. In summary, while the Budget brings a welcomed focus on growth, the construction industry faces an uphill battle. Funding alone isn’t enough. Strategic investment in skills development and innovation, alongside policy support, will be essential for the construction sector to meet the demands of a high-tech, growth-focused economy and turn the government’s vision into reality.

🎊 Congratulations to this year's Ian McCrae Award winner, Sophie Brough from Hoare Lea! Sophie submitted a fantastic essay addressing the question 'Given the links between good air and good health, how can we make wider society understand the importance of air quality improvement? What can those working in the air quality discipline do to improve its messaging so people are prepared to change their own behaviours?', and was presented with a trophy at last week's Routes To Clean Air conference. Judges were impressed with the standard of entries across the board, showcasing the level of knowledge present in our Early Careers Network. To read Sophie's essay, head to the IAQM website: https://lnkd.in/edGhrvc9

It was quite the journey of discovery leading the team to achieve this important milestone. The whole team at Hoare Lea is incredibly proud, not only of the masterplan we’ve helped to shape, but also achieving Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validation for the Net Zero Carbon targets.

In a significant step forward for sustainable development, The Earls Court Development Company has received validation of its net-zero targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This recognition places ECDC among a select group of real estate companies worldwide committed to robust and achievable climate action pathways. The built environment is the second largest contributor to global carbon emissions, accounting for approximately 40% of total greenhouse gases. ECDC’s validated targets demonstrate the company’s alignment with the SBTi’s stringent requirements, positioning it as a leader in driving sustainability in the sector. ECDC has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050 and achieving a 50.4% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2032, using 2022 as its baseline year. These targets are designed to limit global temperature increases to 1.5°C, the critical threshold to prevent severe climate impacts. ECDC’s efforts come on the heels of its recent planning application to transform Earls Court into a thriving community and global exemplar of sustainable development. With a focus on innovation and environmental stewardship, Earls Court is set to become a model for the future of urban living.
