The Australian private hospital sector is in crisis, with around 80 hospitals closing in the past five years and another 12 discontinuing maternity or mental health services. Many doctors warn that private maternity services might completely shut down within the next five years. The growth in private admissions has fallen significantly short of expectations due to rising healthcare costs, increasing out-of-pocket expenses, and unaffordable health insurance. In this article, I speak to Dr. Gino Pecoraro, President of the National Association of Specialist Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (NASOG), about the current situation and potential solutions. Are you curious about the allocation of healthcare budgets in India, the world’s most populous country? See the latest Healthcare Business International infographic! Since 2014-15, India’s public healthcare expenditure has increased, yet only about 1.2% of GDP is allocated to healthcare. This highlights the need for a more robust funding strategy. Historically, India has had high out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) on healthcare. While this has been declining, most people still pay for healthcare out of their own pockets. Additionally, there’s a notable increase in private health insurance expenditures. A recent LSE blog reveals a correlation between private insurance adoption in wealthier states and the decline in OOPE. However, analysts warn that rising OOPE for poorer sections could worsen health inequities. Want to dive deeper into these insights? Recent article updates: The HBI 2024 conference, held on June 10-12 at Park Plaza, London, was a resounding success! As part of the editorial team, I had front-row access to all sessions. This being my first business conference, it was incredibly educational. One session I found particularly engaging was "Decarbonising Healthcare," given my interest in climate change reporting. I wrote an article about how hospitals in South Africa are reducing their carbon footprint, with insights from Avanthi Parboosing of Life Healthcare and Giovanni Accardo of Siemens Healthineers. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/emBiN7Y4 Another piece I wrote addresses the healthcare workforce crisis, building on insights from the HBI 2024 session "The War for Talent: Recruitment, Retention, and Culture."
