We’re pleased that Health Secretary Wes Streeting has announced today that NHS England will enable the trustworthy use of health data held by GPs from participants who have given their consent through research. Historically, large cohort studies such as UK Biobank – where participants have given explicit consent for researchers to access their GP health records – have struggled to gain large-scale access to primary care data. In his speech at the Royal College of General Practitioners Annual Conference, Wes Streeting announced that he is directing NHS England to ensure consented data is shared for research, removing the burden of responsibility from GPs. 🖋️ Read our full response: https://hubs.li/Q02S9fR20

The University of Nottingham is a partner of Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), which harnesses national health data to transform lives, and we're delighted that strengthened ties with the National Research Foundation Singapore will further enhance healthcare innovation between our countries. The Permanent Secretary signed a Memorandum of Understanding for National Research and Development, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, and the Director of Health Data Research UK, Professor Andrew Morris. Together, we will harness the power of secure data science to enhance healthcare, research and innovation, strengthening existing links between the UK and Singapore. Professor Tom Rodden, our Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, said: “The University of Nottingham is proud to be a signatory to this memorandum of understanding. Our teams within Health Informatics in the School of Medicine have been leading the way to help forge relationships such that together the organisations can tackle global health challenges. Led by Prof Philip Quinlan and with support from our excellent Digital Research Service, they have been developing tools using open-source software and open standards to assist partnering organisations’ ability to rapidly share access to data and insights to improve response times to crises such as pandemics or natural disasters. Critically, they have helped to foster interdisciplinary research by bringing experts from different fields to work on complex health problems and further facilitate development of tools, models and platforms saving time while also fostering innovation in health data analytics and visualisation.” Find out more: https://bit.ly/3Yi1I4p #HealthData #Partnership #Research #Innovation #DataScience School of Medicine, University of Nottingham

Healthcare and data science is a common priority for many countries around the world. Done well, this can bring immense benefits to societies, such as helping populations age better, preparing us for future pandemics, and managing chronic diseases to lower healthcare costs. I was glad to witness the MOU signing between Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), National Research Foundation Singapore, and their respective partner institutions in London today. This will strengthen the bridges between Singapore and the UK to drive #healthcare improvements and discoveries, by leveraging trustworthy data for health data science. This partnership will also lay the foundation for future cross-border research with other partner countries. We also had a productive meeting with Wellcome Trust, a charitable foundation committed to improving health through research, innovation and public engagement. (MDDI Photos by Ngau Kai Yan)
