In Nepal, many families struggle to make ends meet, living on less than £1.50 a day. But with Habitat for Humanity’s support, families like Magar and Tek are unlocking hope through financial literacy training and safe loans. Their journey has even inspired their neighbours, sparking a community-wide movement: https://ow.ly/cefF50SJimr #HabitatForHumanity #SustainableLiving #FinancialLiteracy #Nepal | Jersey Overseas Aid, Habitat for Humantiy Nepal

Energy powers our communities, keeping our homes warm in winter and cool in summer. It fuels our hospitals, schools, and industries. But for millions, energy poverty is a harsh reality. Habitat for Humanity is tackling this issue with the ComActivate Project, funded by the EU’s LIFE Programme. We're working in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Lithuania to set up local centres, create energy plans, and train homeowner associations for energy-efficient renovations. The team at Habitat for Humanity GB were incredibly saddened by the news that Simon Boas, Executive Director of Jersey Overseas Aid, has passed away following a cancer journey which he shared with openness and warmth in his public writings. Simon’s leadership of JOA has seen the distribution of millions of pounds in aid being directed to helping the world’s most vulnerable people. The partnership with Habitat alone has seen over £3m put to work in Zambia, Nepal, Malawi, amongst others. More importantly, this has impacted the lives of 924,477 people. Nearly a million men, women, and children who have safe and decent homes, better health, improved livelihoods, and a future to look forward to. Simon’s commitment to this work, and his passion for making a difference, was evident in his hands on involvement in the work JOA supported. Habitat Nepal’s National Director Eliza Sthapit remembers a visit Simon made just last year, “I still remember how many questions he had asked and how our work and JOA's support could be meaningful for our communities on the ground. Simon has in so many ways shown us how valuable life can be and how we can lead it with courage and grace, even when dealing with the most difficult things.” Our condolences and thoughts are with all those whose lives Simon touched.

"New build isn’t going to be the answer to the crisis by itself. We need diverse approaches to address housing supply, and we need to think much more imaginatively and innovatively about the use of empty spaces." Our National Director, Dr Henrietta Blackmore recently spoke to FRAME on advocating for turning vacant commercial spaces into affordable homes as a key solution to the housing crisis. She discussed how our Empty Spaces to Homes toolkit is a great practical tool for community and local authority engagement, creating sustainable and accessible housing with innovative designs and community involvement. It’s important to us that our volunteering programme is impactful and needs-focused – the JOA volunteer team currently in Malawi, working with Habitat for Humanity, is doing exactly this… We'll be hearing more from our superb volunteers in later social posts but we wanted to first introduce you to someone who will benefit from the team's work. 73-year-old Gladys takes care of three orphaned grandchildren. The family relies on small scale subsistence farming but most of the time they aren't able to harvest much. Life is hard because what Gladys earns only sustains them for a short period of time and as a consequence they have no choice but to neglect their family’s more significant needs - such as making sure they have an adequate place to live. Gladys is one of the beneficiaries to have been selected by the local self-help community group in Chatata informal settlement to benefit from the JOA house build project taking place right now as part of Habitat’s Global Village programme. Soon Gladys and her grandchildren will have somewhere suitable to live. The JOA volunteer team is supporting members of the community in building these safe and strong houses - their work means community members are more able to balance the build with their own income-generating activities, family care and farming. Our volunteers have worked hard, and in turn have learned about sustainable development, responsible partnership, and have learned about a complimentary initiative to produce sustainable sanitary products for girls in the community. Well done team! #proud #volunteering #impactful #internationaldevelopment

Did you know that in the UK, over 7,000 vacant commercial buildings could become 19,500 homes through retrofitting? Similarly, in Poland, 12.1% of flats are empty, according to 2021 census data, offering great potential to address housing shortages. Read more here to learn how Habitat for Humanity and Laudes Foundation's three-year partnership aims to address social housing and climate change by renovating and repurposing vacant spaces into homes: https://ow.ly/S3n850SC7EP #HabitatForHumanity #EmptySpacesToHomes #ESHTer
Habitat for Humanity is pleased to announce its collaboration efforts with Laudes Foundation to address the housing crisis in Europe. Every year, 4.1 million people in Europe face homelessness, yet there are more than 30 million vacant homes standing empty! The "Empty Spaces to Homes" initiative seeks to repurpose these unused spaces into affordable housing. This transformative project not only provides homes for low-income households but also aligns with the EU’s goal of net-zero emissions. The buildings sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, representing 35% of energy-related EU emissions. Building on successful pilot projects in Poland and Great Britain, we are now expanding to include Hungary and Croatia. 👇Click below to learn how this project is turning forgotten spaces into thriving homes and communities. https://ow.ly/yaM250SBlOC #EmptySpacesToHomes #ESHTer

Over the course of the week, we were fortunate to have an incredible team of Global Village Volunteers from Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) in the United Kingdom. Despite their diverse professional backgrounds, they set aside their daily routines and joined forces with community volunteers to construct two houses for HFH Malawi's partner families. It was a busy week, but through our collaborative efforts, we triumphed. As Wallace D. Wattles aptly stated, having good tools is essential, but it is equally important to use those tools in the right way. Thank you to everyone who supported and contributed to making this initiative a reality. I extend my gratitude to my colleagues at HFH Malawi, BERNADETTA SAUKIRA and Margaret Siyeni, as well as Habitat for Humanity Great Britain, community members, and the entire JOA team. Your support has been invaluable.
Today, we bid farewell to our colleagues from Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) in the United Kingdom, who were part of the Global Village Volunteers that supported us in constructing two houses for our partner families in Magombo Village, T/A Chitukula. During their week-long stay in Malawi, the JOA team successfully built two three-roomed houses, which are now almost 95% complete. These houses only require finishing touches to be ready for the vulnerable families, thanks to the collaboration between the JOA team and community volunteers. In addition to their construction work, the JOA team also actively engaged with the community members and provided support in various activities, including sewing of reusable sanitary pads. One of the partner families, Gladys, expressed her heartfelt gratitude and extended her thanks to the JOA team, community volunteers, and the HFH Malawi team. She emphasized that their timely support was crucial as her family had been living in a leaking house, and she struggled to meet their basic needs with her casual work. Chifundo Patriot Zulu , the Resource Development and Partnership Coordinator representing the HFH Malawi team, expressed deep appreciation to the JOA team. He acknowledged that the collaboration between the two groups has had a significant impact on the lives of the partner families, bringing them closer to the realization of safe and decent housing.
