"Our approach is to invest in a small number of companies where we can take large stakes and actively engage to create value".   Ken Wotton fund manager for Strategic Equity Capital plc (SEC), shares key insights with Trustnet, including his and the team’s, ‘private equity approach to public markets’ investment strategy where we: 🏢 think of ourselves as owners of the business rather than holders of shares; 🔍 undertake a very high level of due diligence; 📈 take larger equity stakes in the companies we back; 🤝 have a platform for active engagement with management teams and boards.   Discover more about the team’s investment strategy here: https://lnkd.in/dCTXi4jv   #ukequities #publicequities #investmenttrusts | Capital at risk. “Trustpilot has limited direct competition, a compelling value proposition and is a trusted brand.” Ken Wotton, Fund Manager, WS Gresham House UK Smaller Companies Fund, highlights Trustpilot as a FTSE 100 star of the future in an article by Tom Aylott for the July edition of the Portfolio Adviser magazine. Like many small-cap companies listed in the UK, shares in the customer review website trade at a steep discount compared with other global markets, however it has the potential to skyrocket into the FTSE 100 once its price catches up to its real value. Ken comments: “If it can deliver the growth and partially close its rating discount to US listed software peers, that would be sufficient to pilot itself into the top tier of the UK equity markets.” https://lnkd.in/eCkFjSUx (article from pg. 20-21) #growth #smallcap #ukequities | Capital at risk. At Gresham House we believe that a key solution to resolving the global housing crisis will be the use of mass timber 🌳 The updates below on the Canadian Limberlost Place project show the continued development and capabilities of #masstimber in construction. While these showcase buildings around the world are catching attention, there is an increasing adoption of mass timber in more general construction, supporting our forecast that industrial roundwood consumption will increase 2.7 times by 2050, a 3.1% increase per annum, highlighted in our Global Timber Outlook. Mass timber is a revolutionary material in the construction industry, and it is fantastic to see the developments of projects like this! Key mass-timber features to highlight: 🔎 Potential for local sourcing: The glue laminated, and cross laminated timber used in Limberlost Place has been sourced from Canada 👷♂️ Faster construction times: The modular construction enables faster construction times, helping to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget ⬇️ Carbon negative: Mass timber is carbon negative, both assisting with net-zero targets and avoiding emissions from alternative, emissions intensive building materials 🔥 Enhanced fire resistance: Mass timber has enhanced fire resistance compared to traditional construction materials This article highlights Limberlost Place, the first institutional building to be constructed from mass timber in Ontario, Canada. Even more impressively, it is the world’s first net-zero mass-timber building to be heated and cooled by a unique lake-based district heating system. This remarkable ten-story building in downtown Toronto showcases the future of sustainable buildings. A modular construction and prefabrication approach has helped to streamline the construction process, highlighting the efficiency that can come with mass timber construction. Gresham House is the 7th largest sustainable commercial forestry asset manager globally by value. https://lnkd.in/eJ83qhN5 #sustainableconstruction #netzero #innovation #greenbuilding #investmentopportunities

“The deal woke up the wider market to the possibility of tolling agreements being an option, they're not only for large suppliers, though a large supplier has benefits like a balanced portfolio.” 💬 James Bustin, Assistant Fund Manager, Gresham House Energy Storage Fund plc (GRID), comments on the recent tolling agreement with Octopus Energy, which marks a departure from the ‘merchant’ model which has dominated the market until now. As part of the deal, Octopus Energy will pay a fixed fee and take on operation and revenues for around half of GRID’s portfolio, deviating from the standard model where project owners contract with another company that trades the #BESS in the market, and revenues and risks are shared between parties. Although in the past revenues on toll deals were much lower than the worst-case merchant scenario, market values have since plummeted, making such deals more attractive, alerting the wider market to the possibility of tolling agreements as an option. https://lnkd.in/ef4Y657p (Article behind a paywall) Ben Guest #batterystorage #renewableenergy | Capital at risk. Digital inclusion 🛜 We are pleased to share that Wildanet, a portfolio company in our Sustainable Infrastructure strategy, has received a £35mn investment from the UK Infrastructure Bank to boost broadband in rural Cornwall. The investment will enable Wildanet to continue to upgrade and expand its high-speed internet network to homes and businesses in Cornwall, which includes some of the most difficult to reach areas in the UK. Wildanet has grown to become a major regional employer, more than doubling its workforce to over 220 in the last 18 months as well as driving significant economic activity and #employment through its strong local supply chain. https://lnkd.in/ef9h9BRv #digitalinclusion #infrastructure

Habitat banks as a new nature-related infrastructure investment opportunity 🦋🌻 With nature under unprecedented threat, we discuss the benefits of habitat banks on biodiversity net gain in our case study for Principles for Responsible Investment. The formation of #habitatbanks was prompted by the UK Government's Environment Act 2021, which mandates that developers achieve at least a 10% increase in biodiversity value on all new projects. If this is not possible onsite, #biodiversity units can be purchased from providers who create and maintain habitat banks on unproductive, low-yielding land. Our case study highlights Emberton habitat bank, a proposed site near Milton Keynes which will connect existing ancient woodland and local wildlife sites within the surrounding area. Over the next 30 years, the site aims to be maintained as a high-quality habitat, delivering net gains in biodiversity, as well as returns for investors. https://lnkd.in/eW9cy6Pn #naturalcapital
