Independent think tank working to accelerate political action for a green and prosperous UK.

About us

Green Alliance is an independent think tank focused on ambitious leadership for the environment. Since 1979, we have been working with a growing network of influential leaders in business, NGOs and politics to stimulate new thinking and dialogue on environmental policy, and increase political action and support for environmental solutions in the UK. Our projects involve in-depth research and advocacy, often in partnership with other organisations and interests. Our high profile events and specialist seminars provide important opportunities for dialogue with key decision makers. We also co-ordinate Greener UK, a new coalition of major environmental groups focused on achieving a good outcome for the environment during Brexit.

This election result proves people want action on the climate and nature crises. We now have a government with a clear mandate to deliver on renewable energy, cheaper bills and a thriving natural environment. 💪 Climate action is a vote winner. Whilst not always front and centre of the story, efforts to reverse climate change and nature loss can help with the most pressing issues. From the cost of living to the NHS, the public has made it clear they want more investment, not cuts. 📈 We’re pleased green solutions we supported were reflected in Labour's manifesto pledges. We’ll work with the new government to make these happen: ⚡ Setting up GB Energy 🏠 > £13bn to insulate homes and cut energy bills 🚫 No new oil and gas licences 🔄 A circular economy Clean power by 2030 reflects a genuine ambition for the UK to lead the energy transition. Ending North Sea oil and gas extraction is important for the climate, but also makes economic sense. For heating, transport and industry, clean power is the future. It’s not too late to reverse UK nature decline. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs must now quickly refocus the government’s environment plan to deliver on the #EnvironmentAct targets and publish a land use framework showing how the government plans to support farmers to restore nature, especially in our #NationalParks 🌳 Now it's time to turn the manifesto into action. The Labour Party has promised change that requires immediate work. We’ve set out a programme for government, a menu of practical and ambitious climate and nature policy that will benefit people across the UK if actioned. We’ll be working closely with our partners and all parties to keep political ambitions high, including as secretariat of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Environment.

"We can say with confidence that most people did not want to vote for an anti-climate platform. But the election didn’t test the opposite theory…" In our latest blog, Rebecca Willis, professor in energy and climate governance, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University discusses the quiet role of climate in the #GeneralElection, and the role it may play in the future. https://lnkd.in/egdkJqtr

👑🚍 The English Devolution and Better Buses Bills were announced in today’s #KingSpeech These are great news for local communities and climate efforts, here’s why 👇 🚌 Buses: Privatisation has been linked to the decline in England’s bus services. By making local authorities more responsible and encouraging enhanced partnerships, franchising & municipal bus companies, the Better Buses Bill should lead to improvements in the sector. This matters as buses are the most used form of public transport across the UK, and provide the public with an accessible, low cost and green way to travel. We now need a £1 bus fare cap, to further increase accessibility to and use of buses. 🌱🤝 🔄 Devolution: The English Devolution Bill supports Labour’s devolution agenda, giving greater powers to local leaders over emission-lowering levers like transport, planning and energy. However, more powers and public ownership does not necessarily equal better services. Local authorities also need adequate and long term funding, as well as training to upskill staff to deliver services. Local growth will be essential to achieve net zero across the UK, so we welcome the commitments made through these bills. Now, the government must ensure that this growth is green, and succeed in providing local authorities with the power to act on net zero ambitions. 👑🌎 Today’s #KingsSpeech highlighted progress in decarbonisation across crucial sectors including rail, aviation and skills. Our research has identified green policy shortfalls in these areas so we welcome these latest announcements. We must ensure robust plans for a sustainable future across the board. 🚆 Rail: Labour launched the Great British Railways Bill to centralise rail operations under #GreatBritishRailways, a move that presents an opportunity to embed climate responsibility into rail infrastructure planning. Our work indicates that in order to decrease carbon emissions from private car travel, we need to make train travel more attractive, convenient and affordable. Watch this space for upcoming work with Trainline to see how we can ensure train travel is as popular as it can be. ✈️ Aviation: The new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Bill seeks to support the production of SAFs. SAF and other technologies will not deliver significant decarbonisation in the short term, so it’s important this move is not used as an excuse to expand airports. 🎓 Skills: The new Skills England Bill aims to drive technical skill development in education reform the apprenticeship levy. This is vital for overcoming skills shortages and meeting decarbonisation targets in sectors like energy efficiency. We welcome the contributions these announcements will make toward decarbonisation and a healthier natural world. Collaboration and ambitious policies are key to achieving net zero emissions and ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations. 🌍 Read our outputs in these areas, linked in the comments 👇

👑⚡ The #KingsSpeech has concluded, and we've been closely watching the announcements shaping the future of UK energy. Among them, the establishment of GB Energy which will lead green energy investments. We have needed long term certainty for the energy sector for some time, as it has been left reeling from years of stop and start investment, with no clear plan of action for change. 🌍 Today, GB Energy was confirmed to have a budget of £8.3bn over the parliamentary term and will co-invest to accelerate capital-intensive power projects such as offshore wind. - Brilliant news ✅ Alongside ending new oil and gas licenses, this is a move that will provide independence from volatile energy sources and protected households from future price shocks. 💪 Whilst renewable energy was at the heart of the bill, there must also be a focus on the overall power system, including a need for a rapid roll out of clean flexible power technologies that can fill in gaps when renewables aren’t at full capacity. ⚙️ But, the journey doesn't end here. Continuous investment and innovation are crucial for a sustainable and secure energy future. 📈 We’ve set out a programme for government which offers a menu of practical and ambitious energy policy that will benefit people across the UK. With the new government pushing for a faster roll out of clean power, now is absolutely the time to be talking about the materials we'll need to deliver that, and the opportunities that a focus on reuse, remanufacturing and the circular economy could bring. Thanks to Dr Anne Velenturf, IEMA and University of Leeds for inviting me to speak in the final session of this series. Tomorrow's King's Speech is expected to include an Energy Independence Bill. It's crucial to discuss what energy independence means in a renewables dominated system. Today, senior policy analyst Heather Plumpton made the case for circular renewables at the University of Leeds and IEMA webinar. Here's what she had to say👉
