We are pleased to be appointed by Girton College, University of Cambridge to realise The New Court expansion project. Gort Scott – working alongside J&L Gibbons and Price & Myers – has won a design competition for a major planned addition to the College. The 9,400m2 New Court project will be the most significant single building project on the College’s main site since its foundation, and will allow the College to accommodate a larger number of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the heart of the College, while improving conference and performance facilities, including an iconic auditorium. With an emphasis on sustainability, health and well-being and connections between people, buildings and landscape, Gort Scott’s successful approach draws upon the College’s inclusive ethos and rich architectural heritage. The New Court project will be the latest in a series of higher education projects by the practice including St Hilda’s College, Oxford and St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. We look forward to sharing more soon. Making imaginative and considered architecture and urban design.
About us
Founded in 2007 by Jay Gort and Fiona Scott, Gort Scott is a RIBA chartered architecture and urban design practice with a focus on how buildings and places create healthy environments for better connections between people, now and for the future. We are committed to reducing our industry’s contribution to the dual crises of climate and biodiversity, working collaboratively to realise clients’ ambitions for regenerative, circular, and low carbon designs. We are attuned to working and thinking at different scales, from one-off houses to planning pieces of city, drawing out social and sustainable opportunities in each. We work on commercial, education, cultural and residential buildings as well as public realm and urban masterplans. We are recognised for our urban research, which informs the practice’s design work. Gort Scott’s founding principle of making a positive, imaginative and considered contribution to the built environment has seen them design a portfolio of projects ranging from leisure, retail, education, cultural and residential buildings to urban masterplans. Gort Scott’s work draws on a commitment to direct relationships with clients and in depth consultation to draw value from existing contexts and create innovative design solutions. Their experience of the planning process and informed use of technology and materials has led to repeat commissions from clients and their designs winning numerous competitions. Gort Scott is a Certified B Corporation. As a B Corp architecture practice, we’re part of a global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental impact.

Work at Dome House has begun on site. Located at 48 Artillery Lane in Spitalfields, this project involves the adaptive re-use of a heritage asset to create flexible and low impact new workspace. The building has a cranked roof with a glazed lantern atop to draw in natural light. A central circular staircase sits below the lantern and a domed ceiling. A modest rooftop extension will accommodate a new staircase leading to a plant enclosure and a roof terrace, with views over Artillery Passage Conservation Area. A key aim of the project is to improve the building’s environmental performance. The strategy is to retain as much of the original building fabric as possible, whilst upgrading key elements to improve performance. https://lnkd.in/ean_fWzd #ListedBuildings #Retrofit #WorkplaceDesign

Girton College’s original buildings were developed over the late 19th and early 20th century by three generations of the Waterhouse family, beginning with Alfred Waterhouse. They radically broke from traditional college arrangements and are characterised by a stylistic consistency and a strong sense of interconnectedness. Gort Scott’s New Court proposals have been conceived as a direct link to the existing buildings, and a reinterpretation of Girton’s characteristic spatial arrangement. While detailed design work has yet to take place, Gort Scott’s concept proposals envisage a subtle richness informed by Girton’s distinctive existing buildings. Just as Waterhouse combined decoration with functionality, so Gort Scott will also incorporate purposeful ornament such as buttresses, chimneys and expressed water disposal – providing a fresh interpretation of the details which make Girton so rich. https://lnkd.in/egP9r6fc Client: Girton College, University of Cambridge University of Cambridge Structural Engineer: Price & Myers Landscape Architects: J&L Gibbons Acoustic Consultant: Charcoalblue Model: Model Platform Workshop #alfredwaterhouse #girtoncollege #universityofcambridge #heritagearchitecture

When we won this competition back in 2016 we couldn't have imagined it would take 8 years to break ground! Gort Scott has grown a lot in that time, but one thing that hasn't changed is the care and attention we give every project, irrespective of scale, to ensure a successful outcome. There have been many people involved over the years, so well done to you all and thanks for helping us get here. Now it's over to you Paul Green and team at Gray & Sons Builders Ltd to deliver the Silver Street vision!

Work is progressing at our project at Nine Elms Park, viewed from street-level last week. Gort Scott is designing two buildings providing 207 homes for rent, for Moda, with London Square. The buildings sit within larger urban blocks, comprising a family of buildings framing the Linear Park, an urban parkland stretching from Vauxhall in the east to Battersea in the west. Other plot architects are MoCo and Allies and Morrison within a masterplan by Allies and Morrison Client Moda & London Square Collaborators Allies and Morrison & Morris Company Landscape Camlins #housing #newhomes #nineelms #LondonArchitecture

Girton College Cambridge has been a pioneering institution ever since its foundation in 1869 as Britain’s first residential institution offering university-level education for women: a bold step towards women’s full and equal participation in British political, social and economic life. Today the College is co-educational, and is one of the University of Cambridge’s largest colleges with around 550 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate students. There are currently 310 student rooms on Girton’s own grounds. The New Court project will increase on-site accommodation by more than 50 per cent. The College’s founder, Emily Davies, sought a site with clean air within a natural setting on the edge of Cambridge. This enduring context, alongside the College’s strong sense of community and values of excellence, inclusivity and sustainability, has informed Gort Scott’s approach.
