Greater Manchester has significant inequalities across its towns and cities and the impacts of crises we have seen are unevenly distributed, with the greater impact felt by low income and marginalised communities. To truly reduce inequality, input and evidence from the communities most affected is needed to shape decisions and shift power. Our policy team advocates for these communities and the voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations that support them. We were part of the research team for a study that looked at the impact of community and social connections on people’s ability to access advice and support to resolve social welfare problems. We led on the case study of Deeplish in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, which was compared to three other distinct areas across England and Wales. The study, led by a researcher from Bangor University and funded by the Nuffield Foundation and The British Academy, looked at the impact of community and social connections on people’s ability to access advice and support to resolve social welfare problems.
