  • Seven key initiatives addressing #waterscarcity were presented in early-stage legislation this month by the Greek minister of environment and energy. The measures will be backed by more than €1 billion of expected investment, approximately €440 million of which will come from newly allocated EU and national funding. One of the initiatives includes the reform of water #utilities to reduce their number by a quarter and extend control of major urban utilities EYDAP (Athens) and THESSALONIKI WATER SUPPLY & SEWERAGE CO. S.A. - EYATH S.A. (Thessaloniki) over additional areas facing #watercrisis The choice to put more regions under the control of EYDAP and EYATH has faced criticism from anti-privatisation sources against the prospect of the part-listed companies making greater profits from the provision of water. • The risks to the environment and humanity posed by Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CEC) have grown increasingly concerning over the past decade. Actions to protect #waterresources from pollutants and contaminants have been undertaken with newly established legislation and guidelines and increased research budgets allocated to answer these new challenges.   Microplastics, per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (#PFAS), antibiotic resistance genes, and other chemical compounds are continuously released into the environment through anthropogenic sources.   In response to challenges related to CECs, ACCIONA has triggered its innovative and technical potential to create solutions to remove CECs in #wastewater and drinking water scenarios. Under this umbrella, the LIFE PRISTINE project was born, with the support of the European Union through the LIFE Programme of funding for the Environment and Climate Action. The LIFE PRISTINE project is a collaborative project coordinated by ACCIONA with the participation of EURECAT, NX Filtration, Xylem and the Regional Entity of Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment of the region of Murcia (Esamur Entidad Regional de Saneamiento y Depuración de la Región de Murcia), in addition to the support of the Water Consortium of Bilbao Bizkaia (CABB). • Water stagnates in record year for climate finance | GWI Sustainable Development Editor Emilie Filou reports 🌎 Annual climate finance spending by multilateral development banks (MDBs) reached a record $125 billion in 2023, with water and wastewater accounting for 6% of spending. This share has stagnated for the past couple of years, suggesting that banks are not prioritising the sector when it comes to climate finance. The data shows that spending in water and sanitation for climate adaptation measures in low and middle-income countries (many of which are reeling from the impacts of climate change) only increased slightly in 2023. MDBs committed $7,889 million to the water sector last year, out of a total of $124,969 million with measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions continuing to dominate the space. Climate change adaptation advocates and developing countries vulnerable to the effects of climate change have long called for this imbalance to be addressed. More focus on adaptation would lead to increased climate finance for water and sanitation too. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eC2piKG7 #DevelopmentFinance #ClimateFinance #ClimateChange
