📣 Today we launch Global Nomadic Rewire. 📣 I launched Global Nomadic in 2009 when I was 30. I volunteered in my 20s, visiting remote destinations, working alongside incredible people doing inspiring work. I WAS my target demographic - a young person looking to forge my way in the humanitarian sector. I founded Global Nomadic to provide a marketplace, matching people to far-flung, meaningful projects. As my life evolved, becoming a husband and father, I exchanged jungles and rainforests for London, and the business evolved too. Our clients no longer need help getting a foot in the door, but are searching for a Meaningful Second Act. Maybe you are looking to take time out to rethink the direction of your career in a more purpose-led way? Or you’re close to burn out and need time to rest and recover? Or maybe you are in search of an adventure, beyond corporate life? We have curated a bespoke suite of global projects in conservation, sustainability and community development, just for you. So what do you think, do you feel the need to get away and create purpose in your life and career? Please do share your thoughts in the comments. rewire.globalnomadic.com #purpose #sabbatical #travel #wellness #restandrecovery

Commercial Property Solicitor at SE Solicitors | Currently on a two-month sabbatical in Tanzania.

Today marks my final day of volunteering with Arusha Women Legal Aid & Human Rights Organisation (AWLAHURIO) and Global Nomadic in Arusha, Tanzania. This experience has been invaluable and I’m incredibly grateful to have been able to assist Advocate Martha Lyimo at AWLAHURIO with such important work. During my time at AWLAHURIO, I assisted Martha with various cases at both Arusha High Court and Maromboso Primary Court, involving land and inheritance disputes, an adoption case and a divorce case involving gender based violence, an issue which is prominent in Tanzania. Outside of the office, I attended a training seminar with Women's Legal Aid Centre on how to improve child protection in Tanzania and also celebrated the completion of a four-year project hosted by Hand in Hand Eastern Africa, focused on reducing poverty in the Meru District. Every Friday, I joined Martha to host a live Q&A on Shalom Radio, educating the community about their voting rights and the importance of voting ahead of this month’s local election and next year’s general election. Working alongside Martha at AWLAHURIO has been inspiring. Together, we’ve addressed significant legal challenges and supported women and families in the Arusha community. The lessons I’ve learned here about advocacy, human rights and compassion will stay with me forever. Thank you Martha and AWLAHURIO, for this unforgettable opportunity.

Remember the wise words of Dolly Parton: 'Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.' It's essential to strike a balance between work and personal life to ensure overall well-being. Prioritizing self-care and meaningful experiences outside of work can lead to increased productivity and satisfaction. #WorkLifeBalance #SelfCare

Joint Managing Partner | Lewis Silkin | Commercial lawyer | Creative innovative and brand focussed businesses

Leaders also need a break…. Ever since my sabbatical a couple of years ago, I have been a huge advocate of taking a holiday where you switch off, because I observed what a proper long break does to your energy, your stash of ideas, your wellbeing and your connection to your family. Not to mention your humility and understanding that life and work really does carry on without you. In the past year I have discovered that being Joint Managing Partner means being a lot of things to a lot of people a lot of the time. There is no beginning middle or end to the to do list. I absolutely love my job and I am hugely proud and humbled on a daily basis that I have been chosen to be one of the custodians of this great firm. But the last couple of weeks, I have been a bit wobbly. I have worked very hard, for a very long time, and there simply isn’t anything left in the tank. I can see all the fabulous things that we are doing as a firm and my part in it. I don’t need anyone to worry about me, I am going to be fine…but I also know that taking a break when I start feeling like this is absolutely essential to avoid burning out. So many people, especially leaders, think they can’t switch off on holiday, and truthfully , you have to work out how to make it work for you. My wonderful EA @charliehomewood will triage everything while I am away, rather than me monitoring emails all the time , and she will text or phone me if I am really needed . My brilliant JMP Richard Miskella will call me in an emergency. So for me, unplugging means that Teams is being muted , alerts are switched off, and I will check my emails once a day, but rely on WhatsApp for people who need me urgently. I even have an old fashioned digital music player so I can listen to music on the beach without being on my phone . So here’s to occasionally unplugging - not just for our own mental health, but in order to rediscover our ideas and reconnect to our family and the world outside our jobs . Happy summer everyone. Jo x Ps - here’s hoping Hurricane Beryl has finished doing its thing as we are off to Saint Lucia and Barbados … 🤞🏻
