A Charitable Social Enterprise and UK's largest operator of leisure centres and libraries.

About us

Established in 1993, GLL is a charitable social enterprise and workers cooperative. Over the past 30 years we’ve grown to become the UK’s largest leisure and cultural trust. Under our customer facing brand Better, we operate 240 leisure centres, 120 libraries, and 15 children’s centres in partnership with over 60 local councils, public agencies and sporting organisations. You’ll find us working in a multitude of diverse locations; from some of the UK’s most deprived communities to world-class sporting venues such as the Manchester Aquatics Centre, Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, Lee Valley VeloPark and the Copper Box Arena. We welcome over 57 million visitors a year, generating over £440m in social value as we strive to help as many people as possible lead healthier, happier and longer lives. In 2007 we launched the GLL Sports Foundation, which has grown into the largest independent athlete support programme in the country. It has provided 28,000 athlete awards across Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth, Deaflympic and Special Olympic sports at a total value of £15 million. We are committed to providing excellent working conditions and sector-leading career development to our staff. We are one of only 13,000 organisations in the UK to sign up to the Real Living Wage and are an Investors In People Gold accredited employer. We are proud to work together with national charities and Government departments including the British Red Cross, Diabetes UK, Age UK, The Mix and NHS England on initiatives to promote mental wellbeing and physical health.

We’ve joined forces with NHS England to reflect an important NHS reminder on mirrors in over 240 gyms and leisure centres and 76 libraries in England. From today, stickers reminding people to 'Be Body Aware' and to look out for potential early symptoms of cancer will start appearing on mirrors in our facilities across the country. The stickers will feature the message 'Check You Out' urging people to ‘Be Body Aware’, and ‘Know What’s Normal’, for them. The scheme is the latest push by the NHS to find cancers at an earlier stage and is the first time the NHS has partnered with a leisure operator in this way - joining several other partners, such as supermarkets and washroom hygiene specialists, to highlight cancer messages to the public in relevant everyday situations. We're delighted to have signed a new partnership with British Gymnastics, meaning many more children will be able to access Gymnastics training in their local area, including showcasing their skills in competition. Over 7,500 children across Great Britain and Northern Ireland currently have the opportunity to experience Rise Gymnastics, a high-quality and fun-packed gymnastics scheme created by British Gymnastics. Gymnastics involves a wide range of movements that enhance coordination, balance and agility. These skills are fundamental for a child's overall physical development and can significantly improve their ability to perform various physical activities throughout their lives. Danielle Vipond Houghton is our Health and Communities Manager for Westmoreland & Furness working in partnership with Age UK, the Local Authority, North and South Cumbria NHS Health Trusts and others to help people live longer and healthier lives.   Danii has been nominated for a Physical Activity Hero Award at this year's ukactive Awards in acknowledgement of successfully increasing the number of people accessing the Healthwise programme from 26 to 630 within two years.    Danii is enthusiastic about the challenge and benefits of getting more people more active. She says: "To be able to go to work, empower someone to move more, to manage their medical condition to lead a happier, healthier life is fantastic. It is beyond amazing to know that exercises personally prescribed to someone now means they can continue to function independently, are no longer reliant on painkillers, have the confidence to join a social exercise group or reduced medication - it's a feeling like no other. Lifeguards are the unsung heroes of our organisation and the quality and professionalism of our teams is something our lifeguards can take pride in and customers can be reassured by. 3,000 of our people have lifeguard qualifications. Many work early mornings, late evening and bank holidays, day in, day out – keeping our swimmers safe and helping more people to get active and have fun in the water. Having a day dedicated to these water safety experts is great but at GLL we really do appreciate them every day - especially in the summer when our pools are so busy: https://brnw.ch/21wLAES #LifeguardAppreciationDay Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK
