Our team working on Thames Water Guildford Transfer Main Project have marked a significant milestone this week, reaching the halfway point in the laying of Guildford's new water transfer pipe, making significant progress to improve resilience and reliability to the water supply across the Guildford area.
Major milestone! Over half of Guildford's new water transfer pipe is now in place. Paul Wetton is our Strategic Programme Director for Water and gave this update on the project: “We’ve made significant progress to improve resilience and reliability to water supply across the Guildford area, carrying out a series of upgrades to our water treatment sites and laying over half of our new water transfer pipeline between east and west. “The Guildford area currently operates as an ‘island’ water supply zone and the new pipeline is particularly important in helping prevent future supply interruptions across the local area. Once complete it will create a back-up source of water for our Cranleigh customers and those in surrounding villages.” Huge thanks to our partner Galliford Try, carrying out the pipeline works on our behalf and working carefully to protect the local environment and habitats along the route. Nearby, we're also making progress on several multi-million-pound site upgrades as part of our major water network overhaul across the Guildford area. We're improving the reliability of the water treatment process at our Shalford site, while investment at Mousehill water treatment works will increase the amount of water available. We've also installed a new power generator at our Ladymead site, along with control monitors at several of its booster sites to minimise the effect of power surges, reducing the risk of customers experiencing supply interruptions. All of this builds greater resilience and means a better service for our customers.

🚨 A Unique Twist at Galliford Try’s Annual HS&E Conference! 🚨 As Chief Executive Bill Hocking and Group HS&E Director Mike Webb engaged our 140 attendees at St George’s Park, an emergency situation unfolded right in the lobby. This eye-opening exercise, orchestrated by our HS&E Leadership Team in collaboration with the drama group Dramanon Limited, served as a stark reminder of the importance of #healthandsafety in our environment. The day featured additionally presentations and Q&A from Divisional Managing Directors Ian Jubb and David Lowery. A big thank you to everyone involved including Ainscough Crane Hire Nationwide Platforms Flannery Plant Hire Walker Morris LLP and Gateway HSW Consultants for making this an impactful day! ✨ Happy Diwali! ✨ Diwali is celebrated worldwide by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. Referred to as Divali or Deepawali, it is a radiant festival that symbolises the triumph of light over darkness. Spanning five days, the festivities include prayers, worship, delicious sweets known as 'Mithai', dazzling fireworks, cherished family gatherings and vibrant fairs called 'melas'. For Hindus, Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshman, after 14 years of exile. The lighting of diyas (oil lamps) in honour of Goddess Lakshmi symbolises the dispelling of darkness and the welcoming of prosperity and fortune. Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chor Divas on Diwali. This is the occasion of the return of the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahibji, who was freed from imprisonment in 1619. Wishing you a Diwali filled with happiness! 🪔💖✨

Keadby Terminal Assisted Outfall Pumping Station: Asset refurbishment to maintain flood resilience, while reducing both the operational carbon footprint and the overall impact of the project upgrade. Keadby Terminal Assisted Outfall (TAO) is a strategically important asset, protecting homes, businesses and agricultural land from flooding in the Isle of Axholme. The TAO was originally constructed in 1939 and required upgrading and modernisation to ensure the continued operation of the pumping station as resilience and reliability had been lost due to age, obsolescence and general wear and tear, resulting in the need for a major investment. Keadby TAO is the outfall for the River Torne within the Isle of Axholme to the tidal River Trent. It originally comprised a gravity sluice which maintained water levels within the Isle of Axholme and discharged fluvial flow to the tidal Trent when tide levels permitted. High flows were pumped via six pumps, providing approximately 32m3/s discharge capacity when required. The upgrade included: 1. A comprehensive heavy electrical system replacement. 2. Replacement of all pipework. 3. Replacement of the entire control system. 4. The installation of six bespoke fish-friendly electric vertical lift pumps providing 19.2m3/s discharge capacity against a hydrostatic head of 3.7m when required. 5. A complete redesign of the outfall structure to provide three individual discharge cells which will allow safe access to the twelve (1.8m wide) gravity/pumped culverts and twelve 1.8m tidal flaps for inspection and maintenance purposes. Today marks Anti-Slavery Day, an opportunity to raise awareness of the fact an estimated 122,000 people in the UK are trapped in conditions of modern slavery. At Galliford Try, we are committed to enforcing human and workplace rights and work proactively to mitigate the risks of modern slavery within our own business and supply chain. Now, we have come together with other major contractors and Unseen UK to develop this video for the wider industry to highlight the reality of modern slavery victims and demonstrate some of the key signs to look out for, so that together we can eradicate modern slavery from UK construction sites.
