🌳 Use of natural environments linked to improved child mental wellbeing. 📊 A study using GPS data found that children spending more time in natural environments have better mental wellbeing, especially those from lower-income households. 🔬 "Increased use of natural environments is associated with reduced risk of abnormal internalising and externalising outcomes," stated the research. 🏞️ Targeted interventions encouraging disadvantaged children to use natural spaces could help reduce mental wellbeing inequalities. 🦊 The Iberian Lynx is no longer endangered. 🌍 The Iberian Lynx has moved from "endangered" to "vulnerable" on the IUCN red list after a 20-year conservation effort in Spain and Portugal. 🌿 The population has grown from 94 in 2002 to 2,021 in 2023, with 86% in Spain, thanks to collaborative initiatives and habitat restoration. 🔍 Despite progress, threats remain from disease, habitat loss, and declining rabbit populations, which make up 90% of the lynx's diet. 📄 4 new templates for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) legal agreements and planning conditions The Planning Advisory Service (PAS) has commissioned Dentons to create new sample templates, helping local authorities deliver biodiversity gains in line with the Environment Act. These include: 🏗️ Section 106 On-Site Includes monitoring contributions, securing on-site biodiversity net gain by condition. 🏞️ Section 106 Habitat Bank Secure biodiversity gains as part of a wider habitat bank. 🌾 Section 106 Off-Site Includes a habitat management and monitoring plan for off-site BNG delivery. 🌿 BNG Condition Secure on-site biodiversity net gain via a planning condition. These templates require customisation to meet council standards and specific development needs, but crucially streamline the agreement process, benefiting LPAs, councils and all stakeholders involved. 💡 "Electric cement" could lead to zero-carbon cement production! 🏭 Cement is ubiquitous in construction and infrastructure, but its production uses high-temperates in fossil fuel-powered kilns releasing mass CO₂. ♻️ At Cambridge University, a new method of recycling cement using electric-powered furnaces is being developed and tested. 🏗️ This innovative approach reuses cement from demolished buildings and reduces emissions by using renewable energy sources. 🐝❗️ An invasive species of Asian hornet has survived its first UK winter, eating up to 50 bees a day. They pose a significant threat to the environment, especially during a nationwide biodiversity crisis. 72 nests have been found and destroyed so far, mostly in Kent, but 500,000 others are suspected around England and France. The public are strongly encouraged to report sightings, with the Asian Hornet Watch app available to learn how to easily identify and report the insects.
