𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐎𝐑𝐀, 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 Written by Nick Thatcher As organisations grapple with increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks, strategies need to go beyond defences like firewalls. To help businesses stay ahead of these challenges, FSP offers tailored cyber security solutions designed to provide quick and comprehensive protection. Our services allow you to plan for DORA, NIS2 or UK NIS, by securing your network or looking more broadly at operational resilience.  We all know what a firewall is, blocking the bad guys from getting into our networks. The origin comes from physical walls used to prevent the spread of fire, for example in buildings and trains. Back to IT, when protecting our critical assets from malicious intruders, the other option is an air-gapped network, with no physical connection between the outside world. This approach went out of fashion in recent years, due to laborious tasks such as physical tape backup logistics and offline software updates. Today, simple backups are not enough.  Recently, professional ransomware gangs are targeting corporate backups, wiping out a restore strategy, forcing many companies to pay ransoms or risk bankruptcy. Multi-cloud backups, immutable storage and air gapped storage are gaining popularity: if backups are in multiple locations, cannot be changed or are not reachable, they cannot be maliciously encrypted or destroyed. The picture shows the alternative strategy to a firewall: the gap between the dry plants prevents a fire from spreading from one area to another vulnerable area – an ancient and more cost-effective mitigation strategy to fire management than a physical wall.  In the same way, if a cyber security attack cannot spread from one area to another, it is contained, and damage is limited. This brings us nicely to the new EU regulation covering operational resilience, DORA. The regulation covers all financial entities and their critical ICT suppliers and comes into effect in January 2025. Operational resilience for critical infrastructure is covered by the NIS2 directive, which is coming into force from October in EU member states. The UK government has an equivalent NIS regulation. 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭!  We are thrilled to share a really positive testimonial from one of our recent work experience individuals, Mawusi. We're proud to have provided such a fulfilling experience and are excited to see how this week shapes Mawusi’s future career ambitions. “This week has been incredibly informative and instrumental in shaping my career ambitions and the variety of sessions have broadened my understanding of the tech industry. On the first day, we had two talks on cyber security, which I was most excited about, as I was considering a career in red team penetration testing. From our session with Alexander Collins, I gained valuable insights into what it takes to be a pen tester. The next session with Daniel Cato provided a broader view of cyber security, including the role of a cyber security consultant and the various security risks companies face. Our second day was dedicated to an FSP Labs project, which I really enjoyed because of my passion for problem-solving. In this collaborative project, I took on a leadership role, helping to bring together ideas from my peers to create a cohesive pitch. We also had a session with the Change Team, where I learned about the ADKAR methodology used to implement and support change in organisations. We also had a session with the Data and AI team, which was fascinating given the developments in artificial intelligence. Lara Walker explained the importance of data in the business world and how it should be viewed as a valuable asset for making informed decisions. Managed Services led a practical session, where Alex Paris guided us through the process of disassembling and reassembling a laptop. He explained the functions of each hardware component, equipping us with the knowledge to perform minor repairs on our own laptops, which was very helpful. We also developed Power Apps and learned more about the role of the Modern Workplace Team. Additionally, talking to the current apprenticeship cohort gave me a different, more positive perspective on Level 4 apprenticeships! We learned about the structure within the Core Services team from Jack Tame and Anna Macken, as well as about the future growth of FSP and some of the non-technological functions such as communications, marketing, employee experience and Talent Acquisition. Overall, this week has been a pivotal experience, giving me practical skills and insights into both cyber security and tech consultancy, and significantly influencing my career considerations.” A huge thank you to everyone across FSP who made Mawusi’s experience so impactful.
