All Patched Up: Space-Based Research to Help Heal Wounds on Earth #12 Space and Pharma Success Stories Tympanogen is pioneering a groundbreaking wound-healing patch that releases antibiotics directly to wound sites, enhancing tissue repair and potentially reducing the severity of sepsis. This innovation holds significant promise for treating combat wounds in soldiers, where infection risk is high due to less-than-sterile field conditions. In a study sponsored by the ISS National Lab, Tympanogen investigated the structural and mechanical properties of the hydrogel material in microgravity to understand its drug-release capabilities better. The insights gained from this spaceflight experiment are being used to further develop the patch for use on Earth and in future long-duration space missions. Elaine Horn-Ranney, Tympanogen Co-founder and CEO, discussed the company's spaceflight project at ISS Research and Development Conference, emphasising the importance of understanding how microgravity affects the hydrogel structure and drug release. "The goal for us is to start toward the development of a wound-healing model by understanding these material behaviours," she explained. This project exemplifies how space-based research can revolutionise healthcare on Earth, offering innovative solutions to complex medical challenges.
