Breaking 🚨 We've helped win another historic victory in court 💥 In a landmark climate judgment, the Supreme Court declared Surrey County Council acted unlawfully by giving planning permission for oil production at Horse Hill in the Surrey countryside without considering the climate impact from when the oil is inevitably burned. Emissions from burning extracted fossil fuels are frequently and conveniently being left out of reports when planning applications are made for oil, gas and coal projects. However, now the true climate implications of new fossil fuel sites cannot be ignored ✊ This is a stunning victory for Sarah Finch and Weald Action Group, who we supported from the very start as a legal intervener in the case. The government "urgently needs to ramp up ambition on cutting emissions from homes and buildings, transport and agriculture. Every government department will need to swing behind policies for a fair, green transition to a zero-carbon economy." - Danny Gross, climate campaigner at Friends of the Earth https://lnkd.in/e6QZngPn

There's a lot to feel hopeful about from today's King's Speech. The government committed to overhauling our train and bus services so people can travel greener, and signalled change for our outdated energy system. These measures will help get us back on track to meet the UK's climate goals, however, we must demand more 👇 There's a huge challenge ahead, so we need to see the scale of ambition to match this so we can safeguard our future. https://lnkd.in/ess-z8Ar

Today we’re at the High Court challenging the government’s approval of the Whitehaven coal mine in Cumbria. If the mine goes ahead, it will be the UK’s first new deep coal mine for over 30 years 🤯 The mine’s lifetime emissions - mostly from burning the coal - would amount to more than half of the UK’s total emissions in 2022. The government withdrew its defence of the legal challenge last week, admitting that the coal mine was approved unlawfully following the historic Horse Hill Supreme Court ruling last month which we helped win. Together, South Lakes Action on Climate Change and Friends of the Earth are arguing the mine's climate impacts were not properly considered and its approval was unlawful. We need to see investment in renewable energy and home insulation, which has the potential to deliver hundreds of local green jobs, not a dying fossil fuel industry. Take action today by adding your name to our petition calling for no new oil, coal or gas projects: https://lnkd.in/ecHcjW6B

In the largest ever climate opinion poll, completed by the UN, it was found that the majority of people in the world's biggest fossil fuel producing countries want to transition quickly to renewable energy to fight the climate crisis. Of the 75,000 people polled, 86% also thought their countries should set aside their differences and work together on combatting climate change. Find out more below 👇 https://lnkd.in/gfY58PaF

The UK government skirted the ban of this pesticide for four years in a row, disregarding evidence on the devastating impact on bees and going against the recommendation of its own expert advisors. "The harmful effects of these pesticides has been known for over a decade giving British Sugar time to find safe alternatives – in fact this was a condition of being allowed ‘emergency use’ for the last three years." - Sandra Bell, sustainability campaigner at Friends of the Earth. The Labour party committed to ending the use of this bee-killing pesticide in its manifesto. Next we need to see much better support to help farmers adopt nature-friendly methods of farming. https://lnkd.in/e5799EDu

Today, water watchdog Ofwat announced that we're set to see our water bills rise in England and Wales by £94 over the next five years. And yet water companies and their millionaire bosses are still getting away with dumping hundreds of thousands of litres of sewage into our rivers and seas 🤯 "This decision yet again proves that our current form of water privatisation is not fit for purpose." - Paul de Zylva, senior sustainability analyst at Friends of the Earth If we had a Right to a Healthy Environment, water companies would finally be held responsible.
