During the 11th annual Lear Competition Festival (LCF), counsel Alessandro Di Giò, principal associate Filippo Alberti and senior associate Cecilia Carli joined Professor of Competition Law and Economics Giuseppe Colangelo for a discussion on the future of public antitrust enforcement in the digital space. Moderated by partner Gian Luca Zampa, the panelists outlined the various avenues in which digital players may be scrutinized, moving from the quasi-regulatory provisions adopted by various Member States, deep-diving on economic dependency theories of harm and the status of M&A review of digital transactions. They also discussed the scope and limited room that the new market investigation tool entrusted to the Italian Antitrust Authority may have in relation to the digital sector. In addition, partner Ermelinda Spinelli and antitrust advisor Valeria Losco participated in the panel discussion, ‘Labour Markets: Expanding the Scope of Competition Policy?’, providing insight into how antitrust enforcement and employment issues are crossing paths in various jurisdictions. Congratulations to Liam Symonds on being awarded the Wig & Pen Prize for his pro bono legal work and his commitment to supporting marginalised communities. Liam had led a team to secure a substantial victory for a modern slavery survivor in the First-Tier Tribunal, achieving previously denied compensation for the survivor. Read more about the case: https://okt.to/O3n7Lo “I am grateful to the City of London Law Society and City of London Solicitors’ Company for making this award and I’m also grateful to Freshfields for providing us with the opportunity to have worked on this case as part of our broader pro bono modern slavery practice. The team had put in a lot of effort to achieve this outcome (particularly Wannisa Johnston, Hannah Vo, Adil Khan, Christopher Stothers and Vanessa Medina), and we are all very pleased that our client has finally received some compensation for his serious and life-changing injuries” - Liam Symonds. Beyond his work in this landmark case, Liam S. has represented numerous pro bono clients, including survivors of torture, race discrimination victims, and humanitarian charities.
