Politics is often a masterclass in mass communications and nowhere is this more true than America where parties must engage and entice a very diverse audience demographic. Our MD Emma Pearson-Kendall explains what can be learnt about communications from an election result that puts a convicted Felon in the White House. #USelection #Communications #Marketing

Make Your Communications Great Again One of the most critical lessons in communication, whether in marketing, business, or politics, is the power of clear, consistent messaging. A handful of strong core messages can influence, persuade, and mobilize an audience in ways that scattered, complex messages simply cannot. Simplicity Wins Donald Trump's 2016 and 2024 presidential campaigns showcased the effectiveness of this principle. Regardless of your political stance (and definitely mine!), it's instructive to observe how his strategy of repeating a few strong, straightforward slogans resonated with millions of people. These messages, such as "Make America Great Again" encapsulated his entire platform and appealed directly to the emotions of his target voter base. Why Does This Work? Memorability: Simple, potent messages are easily remembered. They stick in the mind, creating cognitive and emotional impacts that complex arguments often fail to achieve. Repetition: Repetition is a powerful tool—it fosters familiarity and can imbue statements with a sense of perceived truth and urgency. Emotional Connection: Messages that trigger emotional responses are more likely to drive action. They bypass the analytical mind and speak directly to the heart of your customer. Clarity: A focused message cuts through noise. In a world awash with information, a clear signal stands out. The key to this approach isn't to oversimplify complex ideas but to distill the essence of your message into something that can be easily communicated, understood, and remembered. Identify Core Values: What are the non-negotiables that define your brand or mission? Review them, challenge them, simplify them and then articulate them clearly. Craft Your Message: Create straightforward statements that convey your core values and mission. Test them to ensure they resonate with your audience. Stay Consistent: Brands thrive on clarity and consistency. Use your core messages across all platforms and communications and ensure your team are using them too. Brand amplification starts from within your organisation. Create Emotional Relevance: Consider the desires of your audience. What messages will move them to action? People buy from people they like and from companies that they think share their values. It’s important to note that embracing the power of core messaging doesn't mean abandoning nuance and detail as that's still a key part of brand differentiation. But it does mean having absolute clarity at a strategic level and being able to convey that simply and clearly in every piece of communication. So, whilst I cannot advocate for Trump’s politics in any single way, I have to acknowledge the talent of his comms team in delivering a masterclass in brand building and message delivery.
