Great to hear from David Lammy here at The Earthshot Prize Earthshot event in ##CapeTown! Whilst Coast 4C is headquartered in Australia and operating in the Philippines, British support has been crucial to our journey to becoming a finalist. From my PhD at Imperial College London with Interdisciplinary Centre for Conservation Science, to incubating the ideas and approach at Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and with support at various stages from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office 's #DarwinInitiative, TRANSFORM (Unilever, FCDO & EY) and UK Blue Planet Fund CfP with Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance . UK is leading the way in driving #seaweed and ##blueeconomy development!

✨ A sparkling start to a week of UK & NZ discussions on quantum collaboration! 👩🔬 Our first visit was to National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the UK's National Metrology Institute, and a key partner in the UK / NZ Quantum Seismic Detection Project with Measurement Standards Laboratory of New Zealand. Wide ranging discussions covered: 🏭 How the NPL Quantum Programme underpins the UK quantum economy, and what's next 🛠 Insight into UK research into microphotonics, superconducting quantum circuits and a range of other quantum technologies 📈 Industry engagement and work on quantum standards to boost innovation. Huge thanks to the Te Whai Ao - Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies delegation for their lively engagement! How could #Africa transition from extracting #minerals for export to refining minerals and manufacturing batteries? 🔋💡 Learn where Africa is most cost competitive in the battery supply chain from our new report, launched today in Lagos by the UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy. Research was in collaboration with The Faraday Institution, the UK’s flagship research organisation on batteries and energy storage, and 100 stakeholders across Africa. Our key findings: 1. With the right investment and policy environment, refining #lithium, #nickel, #manganese and #copper in Africa could be up to 40% more competitive than in the rest of the world by 2030. 2. With just one high quality #refinery for each of these minerals, Africa could generate an additional $6.8bn annual #revenue and create 3,500 good quality #jobs. 3. Initial analysis suggests that countries like #Tanzania and #Morocco could produce #batteries that are cost competitive with Europe under certain conditions, at $68/kwh and $72/kwh respectively. ⚡ We are pleased to see this report launched in Nigeria today by the UK Foreign Secretary, analysing how Africa could play a bigger role in battery production. The report is the outcome of a collaboration between Manufacturing Africa and The Faraday Institution via Transforming Energy Access and the Ayrton Fund. It has so many exciting angles and opportunities, with energy storage a key piece for energy access and transition. We are looking forward to follow-ups and more announcements in this space. ⚡

We were delighted to formally launch our new returnable capital #investment vehicle, GIF Growth, at a reception in Washington DC, to coincide with the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the The World Bank. #GIFGrowth is designed to fill the financing gap that high-impact companies are facing in emerging markets. It has been developed to leverage commitments made by our government partners, and with the goal of deploying $100M to save and improve the lives of over 100M people in low- and middle-income countries. The event was kindly hosted by James Roscoe, MVO, the UK Government’s Deputy Head of Mission to the United States, in recognition of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's role as GIF’s anchor funder.   In #emergingmarkets, seed and angel funding is small and limited, grant capital is scarce, and the landscape for early- to mid-growth stage investors is fragmented. Capital to take highly impactful innovations to scale is even scarcer.   GIF Growth’s success will serve as an important signal to the investor market that high impact innovations are investable, can reach scale, and be commercially sustainable. 🌍 Big News for PREO and Pacific Island Countries 🌍 We’re excited to announce the winners of our latest innovation funding round, marking PREO’s first expansion beyond sub-Saharan Africa into the Pacific Island Countries. 🎉 Seven innovative companies from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu have been awarded grants ranging from £53,000 to £200,000, totalling £918,100. This catalytic grant funding will help accelerate income-generating activities and drive economic development through the productive use of renewable energy (PURE). The funding award was announced by Rt Hon David Lammy MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs for the United Kingdon as part of a wider support package for Pacific Island Countries during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa. This support is part of the Ayrton Fund for clean energy innovation via the Transforming Energy Access (TEA) platform. 🌱 With the Pacific Islands facing significant climate challenges, these companies stand to play a pivotal role in the region’s transition towards renewable energy solutions, enhancing climate resilience, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and creating green jobs.
