Today we are launching our manifesto ahead of the General Election, calling on the next Government to commit to delivering more surplus food to those in need. Titled “Where’s the Food? Strengthening Communities Through Surplus Food Redistribution”, the manifesto lays out measures to incentivise businesses to redistribute more of their surplus, proposals to support the redistribution sector and strengthen communities in the process, and a plan for a wider food system reset. We are calling for: 💚 Subsidies for farmers to cover redistribution costs 💚 Tax benefits for businesses donating surplus food 💚 Mandatory food waste reporting 💚 Clear guidelines for ‘good samaritans’ on food donation safety 💚 Sustained funding for farm level food redistribution 💚 A UK-wide plan to end charitable food aid 💚 Resources for local food waste and food security projects By working together, government, the third sector, and industry can overcome the challenges to redistributing surplus – and ensure more food reaches the people who need it. FareShare UK
Non-profit Organization Management
We redistribute surplus food to charities that turn it into meals. We are doers. We are a community. We change lives.
About us
FareShare is the UK’s national network of charitable food redistributors, made up of 18 independent organisations. Together, we take good quality surplus food from right across the food industry and get it to nearly 8,500 frontline charities and community groups. The food we redistribute is nutritious and good to eat. It reaches charities across the UK, including school breakfast clubs, older people’s lunch clubs, homeless shelters, and community cafes. Every week we provide enough food to create over two million meals for vulnerable people. 📣 240 Yorkshire Building Society colleagues took on an incredible Yorkshire Walking Challenge and fundraised a phenomenal total of £48,000 💚 👟 113 colleagues walked for 10 miles to complete Pen-y-Ghent, and 127 colleagues did the entire Yorkshire 3 peaks which totalled up to 26 miles. Some colleagues woke up at 3am, some chose to run the distance, and one colleague even went dressed as a dinosaur! Every colleague was there for the same reason, to help raise money for FareShare towards the amazing £1 million fundraising target that YBS have set as our partner. We are grateful to every single person who took on the challenge, gave their time, , and kept smiling through the British summer weather. Thank you so much Yorkshire Building Society. A big thank you to Jo Bottomley who worked behind the scenes to make the day happen, it could not have happened without your coordination! 🤝

It's Great British Pea Week! We were delighted to be invited to join Greenyard in celebrating this week; highlight the incredible 500,000 meal equivalent milestone that they recently reached; and come together to mark 30 years of FareShare! 💚 The team began their day visiting a Pea Field where the harvest is in full flow. They had the opportunity to meet the grower, learn what makes a great pea harvest, and take the opportunity to ride in a pea viner. It was a great opportunity for those from FareShare that are involved in the wide ranging partnership to connect with the Greenyard team. Then they were invited to sample some delicious lunch dishes where peas were the star of the show, have a go at some pea-themed quiz questions. FareShare also had the opportunity to share statistics about the amazing impact of our partnership; including that in the last 12 months, frozen food from Greenyard has reached almost 1.8k different charities, providing nutritious vegetables to communities across the UK. Finally, they were invited to go on a tour of the Factory where they saw the peas through the next stages of the process: sorting, cleaning, blanching and freezing! To finish the day, they headed back for tea and special partnership 30th anniversary cakes. Thank you so much Greenyard for an insightful day, we are so grateful for your partnership. A big thank you to Laura Dixon for hosting us!

Following the UK General Election results, George Wright, CEO at FareShare, said: “In our decades of tackling food waste, FareShare has yet to find a politician who disagrees with the urgent need for immediate government intervention to combat the pressing environmental issue of food waste for social good. Over the years, we have made significant strides with the support of MPs and senior political figures, transforming the UK’s response to food waste. This was a historic election, and the new Government's role in addressing the staggering levels of food waste, especially during a time of increased financial pressure, particularly among children, is crucial. As a charity that provides food to over 2,000 charities that support children and young people, we welcome the Labour Government’s policy to bring free breakfast clubs to primary schools across England. The UK still lags behind its counterparts in the US, France, and Spain in redistributing food. The Government must create an economic and legislative environment that benefits surplus food redistribution and results in more food getting to people who need it. Food redistributors, charities, and businesses are already hard at work. We know the power surplus food can have to create positive change, and we are hopeful and eager to work with the new government to deliver lasting change to communities across the UK.” Click here to find FareShare's manifesto 👉 http://bit.ly/3U5AZWP

We believe that making surplus food part of a wider food system reset is vital. The food sector is vast and complex, and in some cases, solutions created for one part of the system are contradicted or undermined by policies governing another. There is a need to join up existing strategy and policy documents, with a long-term holistic vision to guide them. With the election upon us tomorrow, we’d like to thank the candidates from all political parties who visited our warehouses during their campaigns! Redistributing surplus food plays a vital role in strengthening communities across the country. We need the next government to help us turn an environmental problem in to a social good. This is why we recently published our Where’s The Food? Manifesto, which calls political parties to commit to delivering more surplus food to those in need. Our manifesto underlines the importance of strengthening communities by supporting the redistribution sector. From the growers and retailers who redistribute their surplus food, to the charities and community groups on the front line, the organisations we work with are rooted in their communities in every constituency in the UK. Their work relies on an effective redistribution sector that can get surplus food to those who can make use of it. But we need to improve the way this supply chain works, by making it more effective and efficient, and ensuring we have people with the right skills to keep it working.
