Eliminating the poverty premium - the extra costs people on low incomes pay for essential products & services.

About us

Fair By Design's vision is a UK where poor and low income people pay a fair price for essential services. People in poverty pay more for a range of products including energy, through expensive tariffs; loans and credit cards, via higher interest roans; and insurance, because of costlier premiums for living in certain postcodes. This is known as the poverty premium. We collaborate with industry, government, and regulators to design out the poverty premium. Our Venture Fund provides capital to help grow innovative and scalable ventures developing products that help make markets fairer. Ascension manages the Fair By Design Fund. Fair By Design's policy and advocacy work is run by the Barrow Cadbury Trust on behalf of a group of foundations.

Today Fair4All Finance's new research shows 20.3 million people are now living in financially vulnerable circumstances across the UK, up by 16% from 17.5 million in 2022.    Good to see them calling attention to the poverty premium, which is costing the country a staggering £2.8bn per year.

New research from Fair4All Finance, Trajectory and CACI reveals how nearly half of all UK adults are now living in financially vulnerable circumstances – an increase of around 3 million over the last year. This means that over 20 million people are now firmly in one of our 6 segments of financial vulnerability. These segments have been designed to support organisations to better understand, serve and design for customers in financially vulnerable circumstances, a market that has seen significant growth in the last year. Which? and a coalition of consumer groups and energy firms are urging Ofgem to ensure loyal customers are able to access the same energy deals as new customers. The Ban on Aquisition only Tariffs (BAT) was introduced by Ofgem in April 2022. It has played a vital role in delivering fairer outcomes for customers by ensuring loyal customers are able to get the best deals. It also ensures that millions of customers in debt, who may not be able to switch to a new firm for months or even years, are able to access a better deal with their current supplier. Removing the (BAT), as proposed from this October, risks exacerbating the loyalty penalty and unsustainable business practices. #ConsumerRights With Citizens Advice, End Fuel Poverty Coalition, Fair By Design, E.ON Octopus Energy, Rebel Energy UK and So Energy

We're very pleased to see a commitment to tackle the cost of car insurance in the Labour Party Manifesto. 🚗 ✅ Ending the poverty premium in car insurance is vital to put money back into the pockets of people on low incomes. We also welcome pledge on reducing energy standing charges. 💡

We’re launching our election manifesto calling on the next Government to tackle the poverty premium as a key priority. Taking action on the poverty premium is an effective way for the next Government to put money back into people’s pockets without additional money from the Treasury. Here’s how it can do it: 📑 Financial Inclusion 📑 Introduce a national financial inclusion strategy. ⚡ Energy ⚡ Introduce an energy social tariff for those who need it most. ☔ Insurance ☔ Tell the financial services regulator to investigate the poverty premium in the insurance market and take action where needed. 💳 Credit 💳 Government to drive a step change in the provision of affordable credit.
