Join us for our next webinar this Friday from 3 pm - 4 pm for 'The Journey to Meaningful Work, with Combat Stress'. In light of this year’s Armed Forces Day, Ex-Military Careers teamed up with the folks at Combat Stress – the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health – to bring you a brand-new webinar. A huge thank you to Callum Dudrenec, Dave Aitken and Robert Marsh for sharing your insights, advice, stories, and experiences on work and life from a veteran’s perspective. Introducing – Robert was commissioned into the Scottish Yeomanry in 1994 and subsequently served with the Light Dragoons, the Queen’s Own Yeomanry and the Royal Yeomanry – completing an operational tour to Bosnia in 1996. Robert had his first run out with Combat Stress from 2005 to 2011 as Director of Fundraising & Communications – during this time, income and awareness significantly increased, as was the successful delivery of the 90th Anniversary celebrations at Westminster Abbey and afterwards at Westminster Hall. Robert returned to Combat Stress in September 2015 and feels as though he has come home. The evolution of the charity continues, but what hasn’t changed is its underlying mission, which is to help veterans suffering with mental health issues to lead fulfilling lives.  Robert lives in rural Berkshire with his Pets as Therapy dog, Bosco.   Dave joined Combat Stress in 2020 and is a Social Worker. He has professional responsibility for the Peer Support Service, Family Support, Co-Production, and Safeguarding within Combat Stress.   He also served in the Army for 22 years, attaining the rank of WO1. He spent half of his time in the military delivering and managing Personal and Family Support Services, during the first half, Dave deployed to Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, and Iraq operationally. He also served as a recruit training instructor and was based in several locations throughout Germany and the UK. #armedforcesday

Spencer Bull is a British military veteran known for his resilience, bravery, and inspirational story. He served as an officer in the British Army for over two decades, demonstrating exceptional leadership and dedication throughout his career. However, his journey took a challenging turn when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2005, a progressive neurological disease that affects the central nervous system. Despite his diagnosis, Bull's determination and positive spirit never wavered. He continued to serve in the Army for several more years, adapting to his condition and proving that physical limitations do not define one's ability to lead and inspire. His story is one of unwavering courage and embodies the soldier's ethos of never giving up, regardless of the obstacles. After retiring from the military, Bull transitioned into a new role as a motivational speaker and advocate for disability awareness. His speeches and public appearances often focus on overcoming adversity, the importance of mental resilience, and the power of a positive mindset. He uses his experiences to inspire others to face their physical, mental, or emotional challenges. Bull's impact extends beyond his military service and public speaking. He has been involved in various charitable activities, particularly those supporting veterans and individuals with disabilities. His efforts have helped raise awareness about MS and the needs of veterans, contributing to broader societal understanding and support for these communities. In recognition of his service and ongoing contributions, Bull has received several accolades. His story has been featured in various media outlets, highlighting his role as a hero not just for his military achievements but also for his exemplary personal journey. Spencer Bull remains a symbol of strength and resilience, showing that true heroism often lies in how one confronts and overcomes life's most difficult battles. #militaryhero

Rocky Bleier's journey from the gridiron to the battlefields of Vietnam and back is a testament to his extraordinary resilience and determination. Born in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1946, Bleier's athletic prowess was evident from an early age, culminating in a standout college football career at the University of Notre Dame, where he contributed to a national championship in 1966. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1968, his promising NFL career was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Vietnam. In 1969, an ambush left him severely wounded, with a bullet in his thigh and shrapnel in his leg, leading doctors to doubt he would ever walk again, let alone play football. Despite the dire prognosis, Bleier's indomitable spirit saw him through a gruelling recovery. Encouraged by a postcard from Steelers owner Art Rooney and his own unyielding resolve, Bleier worked tirelessly to regain his strength. By 1970, he was back with the Steelers, though his return to active play took two more years of relentless effort. His persistence paid off spectacularly; by the mid-1970s, he had become a key player in the Steelers' offence, contributing significantly to their four Super Bowl victories in that decade. The 1976 season was particularly notable, with Bleier and Franco Harris both rushing for over 1,000 yards, a rare achievement for teammates. Rocky Bleier's post-football life has been equally impactful. He became a motivational speaker, sharing his story of courage and perseverance, and authored a book that was adapted into a television movie. His legacy is one of overcoming immense obstacles, from the life-threatening injuries in Vietnam to achieving NFL greatness. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984, Bleier remains a symbol of the human spirit's capacity to triumph over adversity, inspiring countless individuals with his story of fighting back and achieving greatness against the odds. #militaryhero
