Interested in greenhouse gas emissions? You really shouldn’t miss this! If you were at the Esri UK Annual conference on May 14th you will have heard, first hand, how Cadent is making significant reductions in its methane emissions. If you didn’t make it on the day, don’t worry. You can read about Cadent’s achievements in a newly published case study. In 2022/23, over a million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions leaked from Cadent’s gas pipes. However, now the company has built a science-based solution using #ArcGIS that is helping it to reduce emissions in some areas by up to 90%. The company also has exciting plans to extend the solution further and create automated workflows. It’s no secret that globally, glaciers are in a state of retreat as a result of climate change. Devastatingly, some countries such as Slovenia and Iceland have already lost whole glaciers. But how are three of Greenland’s largest glaciers coping under this human-induced stress? We explored this question using TermPicks glacier trace dataset and Artic Imagery available in the Living Atlas, animating the position of these ice formations from 1985-2020. Responsible for managing a campus? What you need is a Digital Campus, like the one created at The University of Warwick. This leading university has built a digital twin of its entire 200-hectare estate, which combines data from dozens of separate systems and spreadsheets. Built with Esri’s #ArcGIS System, it consolidates information on everything from streetlighting and underground assets to biodiversity sightings and energy usage to provide staff with a single source of information. Data is clearly presented on 2D and 3D digital maps of the campus, as well as on interactive dashboards and in engaging Story Maps. As a result, members of staff in the Estates Team and beyond can easily visualise situations and make well-informed, strategic and operational decisions relating to the management and future development of the campus. If you manage a campus or other large estate, do take a look at the recently published case study about the University of Warwick.
