Join us for a panel discussion with experts and practitioners in systems approaches on how engineering could support moving towards actionable solutions to wicked problems. The Academy advocates for decision makers to apply systems approaches in navigating and tackling complex challenges that the UK and the world are currently facing. This event will bring perspectives from academia and the public sector on how systems approaches could help form actionable solutions to ‘wicked’ problems, where the problems are so complex and interconnected that there are no clear solutions. We will be joined by guest panellesit Guru Madhavan, Senior Director of Programs at the US National Academy of Engineering, and a systems engineer by background, who will bring insights from his new book 'Wicked Problems: How to Engineer a Better World'. The panel will also include Professor Sarah Sharples, who is the Chief Scientific Advisor at the Department for Transport and Professor Yasmin Merali, Emeritus Professor of Systems Thinking at the University of Hull. Today on #EarthDay we're launching our new Green Future Fellowships programme, funded by a £150 million first of its kind endowment from the UK government. The Green Future Fellowships programme will fund practical, breakthrough technologies and climate change solutions to achieve #NetZero. Around 10 researchers will each receive awards of approximately £3 million annually over the next five years totalling more than 50 awardees, with support for research at all stages of development. "The UK’s decarbonisation targets in 2030 and 2035 are fast-approaching, and the next five years will be critical to achieving net zero. The Green Future Fellowships represent a significant opportunity during this critical period to develop and scale technologies at the cutting edge of climate research." - Baroness Brown of Cambridge DBE FREng FRS FMedSci Find out more about the Fellowships: https://lnkd.in/e6SnN-3x Department for Science, Innovation and Technology [Image description: a woman in a lab coat and gloves pours material between two small bottles]
