While its usage is projected to decrease over the coming years, the UK economy still heavily relies on gas. We’ve published a briefing on the role of gas in industry, with our friends at the Carbon Capture and Storage Association. The briefing covers the significant role that gas plays in powering the hard-to-abate industrial sector, how carbon capture and storage can reduce emissions, and what needs to happen to transition the UK economy away from unabated gas. 🖱️Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gnVYbKs6 This is the third briefing in our Fuelling the Future series. The series has previously covered the broad role of gas across the entire economy and the role of gas in generating energy. On the GB Energy announcement👉 “The expansion of clean, secure, homegrown energy and the economic growth this will bring can deliver huge benefits to the whole population,” says our Chief Executive Emma Pinchbeck. The Prime Minister and the Energy Secretary have announced a partnership between Great British Energy and The Crown Estate, and the introduction today of the Great British Energy Bill. “GB Energy can play a vital role in making the Government’s clean energy ambitions a reality," Emma concludes. 📈 Energy bills are due to increase from October with the price cap likely to rise by around 10% (Cornwall Insight). With households already feeling the squeeze, we’re asking: How can the Government help support the most vulnerable energy customers? Millions of households are facing unaffordable bills. Increased debt levels and higher prices are limiting customers’ ability to save and spend money – and in too many cases, affecting people’s health. Ofgem estimates that the total debt held by UK energy customers could be as high as £3.32 bn… although this figure might be higher still. National Energy Action (NEA) says around 6 million households are struggling with fuel poverty. The world of domestic energy is changing – so it’s time to change how customers are billed and supported, too. Energy bills currently include the shared costs of our move to cleaner power, and after the energy crisis, it should be ensured that measures are targeted effectively and reach those who need the most support. 📋 In our new report, Policy Solutions: Taking immediate action to make bills affordable this winter, we’re urging the Government to take three crucial steps to support energy customers better. - As much as possible, policy costs should come from general Government spending, not bills. - Any remaining costs should be spread fairly. - Targeting customer support by doubling the Warm Home Discount will help the households who need it most. We believe these changes could lower bills for households across the country quickly and sustainably. 🖱️ Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/esFcJt4C 👈   #AffordableEnergy #EnergyPriceCap #EnergyBills #CleanEnergy

🏗️⚡Walking around the Hinkley Point C #NuclearPower station, it’s hard at first to grasp the immense scale of the project. That is until you hear that, when complete, it will generate enough low carbon energy to meet 7% of the UK’s electricity needs. 🏠That is enough electricity to power more than 5 million homes… Yesterday, our team was lucky enough to be guided around the site by our friends at EDF who are developing the project. We met with reactor room operators, the project’s Head of Construction Mark Dillon and Hinkley C’s Managing Director Stuart Crooks. Stuart, a former apprentice, spoke to us about the skills gap in the energy industry and how Hinkley Point C is helping to address that. So far, the project has trained over 1,300 apprentices and 8,000 people have been trained at the project’s Centres of Excellence. 👋We had an amazing time at Hinkley Point C and want to say a huge thanks to the team for having us. Find out more about the project: https://lnkd.in/epdEuvVD Hinkley Point C is being developed by EDF and CGN. We are proud to say that EDF is a member of Energy UK. #EnergySecurity #HinkleyPointC

The UK and EU are deeply connected on energy and climate change. With the new Government signalling its desire to reset the country’s relationship with the EU, we’ve explored what this could mean for the energy sector 👇 More than a quarter of Europe’s lost Russian energy was replaced by exports from the UK, bolstered by the UK’s Liquid Natural Gas regasification terminals. Additionally, it was electricity from British power stations that made up a significant proportion of the shortfall and kept the lights on in Paris and across France in summer 2022. 🤝 The value of working with our closest neighbours will continue beyond the energy crisis, as both the UK and EU move towards reaching the goal of climate neutrality. Our analysis shows that greater UK-EU cooperation could reduce the cost of meeting the 300GW offshore wind target in the Ostend Declaration by €13bn. Market linkage could also avoid the need for the EU to import an additional €2bn of gas per year; the result of increased fossil fuel generation offsetting decreased renewables imports from the UK. Find out more about the power of partnership in our new report: https://lnkd.in/emnbgAyB

👑 King Charles III delivered his King’s Speech today, marking the State Opening of Parliament. In it he laid out priorities for the new Government, but what does this mean for the UK’s energy industry? We’ve extracted 5 takeaways: Energy as a cornerstone of the economy: The Government recognises energy as a clear driver for growth and sees the delivery of #NetZero as central to their vision for the future. Pro-business and pro-investment: A clear commitment to creating a partnership between the Government and businesses to deliver for working people, investing in industry, skills and new technologies. Establishment of GB Energy: Establishment of a publicly owned energy company which will own and operate clean power projects, driving down costs for renewables and reducing the cost of energy bills. Build, build, build: Facilitating the delivery process for critical infrastructure to unlock the delivery of the 2030 clean power mission. EU-UK Cooperation: A commitment to improve our trade and investment relationship with the EU, which is critical for delivering our Net Zero targets. 🖱️ Read our full response: https://lnkd.in/eyG-mRQF 👈 #CleanEnergy #EnergySecurity #AffordableEnergy
