Yesterday, Coronation Gardens hosted the opening ceremony for its newly revamped playground, a project that highlights the community's dedication and teamwork. The event saw families, local residents, and community leaders gather to celebrate. The new playground, funded by Richmond and Wandsworth Councils and the Wimbledon Foundation, was a focal point. Wandsworth Council contributed £143,000, and the Wimbledon Foundation added £30,000, which also supported a new biodiversity border. The playground is designed to be inclusive, ensuring all children can enjoy it. The renewed site features encourage vital interaction with nature. The expanded long border now has plants that support pollinators and offer year-round colour. We planted Magnolias and improved the rose garden, new trees were planted, and interpretation boards explain the plants' value to wildlife, encouraging visitors to support biodiversity. The project included community consultations to ensure local input shaped the playground. The "Friends Of Coronation Gardens" group was praised for their efforts, including planting spring bulbs and maintaining a quiet corner garden. We also worked with the Putney School of Art and Design on plans to restore the heritage drinking fountain. Local artist Gillian Brett's winning design for a new sculpture on the fountain will be installed next summer, restoring it to its original 1904 condition. The garden was also awarded the prestigious Green Flag for its upkeep and improvements! One of seven parks and green spaces across Wandsworth to have been awarded the prestigious #GreenFlag award! As part of #LoveParksWeek’ celebrations, a campaign by Keep Britain Tidy, the Green Flag was proudly raised and celebrates not just the beauty of Coronation Gardens, but also the hard work and dedication of the teams who maintain the space to such a high standard. The ceremony ended with a commitment to continue enhancing the gardens, promising more features and improvements in the future. The revamped playground and gardens are now ready for the community to enjoy, marking the start of a new chapter for Coronation Gardens.

Last week saw Enable host 125 girls local to Wandsworth for a festival of physcial activity at Barn Elms Sports Center! The event intended to inspire and celebrate female participation across the borough! Not only did the sun shine but local secondary school girls got 45 minute sessions in rowing, football, beach volleyball, pilates and boyo! Reviewing the event allowed Enable to learn about the barriers Wandsworth girls face. Isolating our approach to Wandsworth will enable us to co-produce a method with young women in the borough to inspire and increase the access of physcial activity to women and girls. Read more about why festivals like this are important to young women and its impact below!

For #RefugeeWeek this year, the theme is Our Home. 🏡🌎 At Enable, working closely with the Homes for Ukraine Programme in Wandsworth, we have seen how hard it is for refugees to move to a new country and leave their home behind due to war, conflict or to find a better future. It is not only important for us to raise awareness for refugees this week but to also take a moment to be grateful for #OurHome.   See more on how to find out more on how you can get involved! The 10-16 of June is Loneliness Awareness Week. This week at Enable we've been encouraging our team to think about how their work reduce loneliness in our communities and participate in #randomactsofkindness. So much of our work helps people stay connected with their local communities, a crucial element in reducing isolation. We foster connections through events, sports activities, art, and green spaces. By creating opportunities for people to engage with others and their surroundings, we truly 'enable' community bonds. One of the exciting ways we do this is via Putney School of Art and Design. Our free community art classes across Wandsworth increase engagement and support local residents in connecting with others while ensuring high-quality teaching and learning. Each course often includes students who not only seek to improve their own situation but also benefit from helping others. For example, one student, referred to the programme, organizes transport for an older participant, while another helps make tea during breaks, boosting their confidence and social interactions. "It’s so good for me to leave my flat for this (art) class. Sometimes it’s the only time I get out, and I’ve been invited to go on a community seaside trip, which I will definitely go on." "I love the art class, it gets me out of the house and to meet up with other people." Carolyn #LonelinessAwarenessWeek #RandomActsOfConnection #CommunityEngagement #EnableWellbeing
