About us

Our sector makes an incredible difference to the world, but it’s shrouded in unhelpful traditions, outdated measures of impact and barriers to participation. That’s why since we launched our Real Impact Manifesto in 2018, we’ve been calling out problems in the sector and changing how we work. We’re seeing green shoots of progress, but significant change will require the entire sector to commit and act. So, here in 2022, we’re relaunching our Real Impact Manifesto and asking you to join us in working towards a fairer, more equitable environment where research can have a real-world impact and those within it can reach their full potential.

We had lots of fun at the Bradford Dragon Boat Festival yesterday while raising funds for the BookTrust. Two teams from Emerald competed in the annual Dragon Boat race, Emerald Express captained by Emma Tregenza and Emerald’s Dragon Force led by Simon Cox FCA CIPD. The BookTrust has been chosen as Emerald’s Charity of the Year for 2024 and so far over £10,000 has been raised for the charity through a series of fundraising activities. We’d like to thank everyone who took part in the race and to those who have shown such great support. Read more here 👇 https://lnkd.in/efg9VbKe

This Sunday, two teams from Emerald Publishing will compete in a Dragon Boat race alongside other businesses, all raising money for their chosen charities. As part of Bradford’s Dragon Boat Festival, Emerald’s Dragon Force and Emerald Express will both take to the water to raise funds for the BookTrust. Emerald has chosen the BookTrust, the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, as our Charity of the Year for 2024. Through a variety of fundraising events throughout the year, we’re proud to support the BookTrust as they work to get millions of children and families reading together from the earliest possible age. If you’re in the area, come along and cheer us on. If you’d like to donate you can do so via JustGiving here 👇 https://bit.ly/4cKfZeF BookTrust

Giving communities access to new opportunities for learning is something we actively support. So, when we were approached to help deliver a copy of ‘Sensory Penalities: Exploring the Senses in Spaces of Punishment and Social Control’ to every prison library in England and Wales we were keen to get involved. The book, edited by Kate Herrity, University of Cambridge, Bethany E. Schmidt, University of Cambridge, and Jason Warr, De Montfort University, explores prisons, sites of confinement and punishment through the lens of the sensory “visceral” experience. The authors of 'Sensory Penalties' originally set up a GoFundMe page to achieve their goal, however, Emerald will now cover the costs, working alongside Bang Up Books for distribution. The money originally raised will be donated to Prisoners’ Education Trust. Prisoners' Education Trust #academicpublishing

Thank you to everyone who joined, or registered, to attend today's webinar 'Embracing Neurodiversity in Research: How does academic publishing need to change?'. There were so many important takeaways, ideas and thoughts, which Rob Edwards has summed up really well below. As an academic publisher, what was clear from the discussion was how many of our publishing processes are not accommodating to the neurodivergent community. Along with the Neurodiversity & Entrepreneurship Association and IOP Publishing, we're looking forward to what the next steps will be to change this. Thank you, Dr Angela Carradus FRSA, Dr Sharon Zivkovic, Dr Kellie Forbes-Simpson, Dr Vicky Mountford-Brown, Professor Sujeet Jaydeokar and Vicky Williams for sharing your experiences.

CEO of the Neurodiversity & Entrepreneurship Association

Some of my favourite people sharing experiences of publishing and academia for #neurodivergent scholars. Very pleased that the Neurodiversity & Entrepreneurship Association have partnered with Emerald Publishing and IOP Publishing to bring together today’s panel. Key points today: ➡️ Are we embracing rich divergent minds in academia? ➡️ How are our managers and bosses being equipped & trained to best support ND colleagues? ➡️ How do we mitigate against a very ‘neuro-normative’ review process? ➡️ Rejection sensitivity dysphoria is heightened for many ND people. Often the review process can be a brutal experience & one that makes ND academics stop publishing. ➡️ Feelings of being a ‘problem person that needed fixing’ in academia. Resulting trauma casts long shadows. ➡️ Writing conceptual papers can work well with ND associative thinking ➡️ Sharing experiences of neurodiversity can be positive with the right colleagues. Feeling that the narrative is changing. ➡️ Wellbeing & student support colleagues can be great allies and advocates ➡️ What needs to change? Adapting working environments. Protected time away from the expected bureaucractic tasks for writing, reflection and collaboration. ➡️ How can we better capture the essence of research from ND academics? We’re asked to squeeze our research into a very restrictive journal article model. There’s a disconnect between the creative excitement of idea generation (what academia should be) & the obligations of publishing. Fitting in can be a huge challenge & alternative models of dissemination like video would be a benefit. ➡️ The publishing landscape can afford to be more adventurous in its outputs (without impacting on rigour & robustness). ➡️ We need more ND academics in editorial roles. ➡️ Learn how you understand, learn and work. Confidence & creativity can be unlocked by knowing how your ND brain works 🎉🎉 Dr Angela Carradus FRSA Kellie Forbes-Simpson Dr Sharon Zivkovic #sujeetjaydeokar Vicky Williams Vicky Mountford-Brown

If you're wondering why we were recognised in The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality last week, listen to Emerald's CEO, Vicky Williams, on why this award means so much. ▶️ https://bit.ly/45ESfpw Vicky first set up our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) programme back in 2016 and since then the programme has been the driving force for change across the whole organisation. There's so much more we want to do in our gender equality journey, but The Times Top 50 status shows how far we've come and has given us even more determination to keep moving forward. #EDI #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion #TimesTop50 #GenderEquality

We’re delighted to announce that Emerald Publishing has been recognised as one of only 50 businesses that made this year’s Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality list. The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality 2024 is the UK’s most highly-profiled and well-established listing of employers taking action to create workplaces where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive. The assessment process focuses on three key areas: an organisation’s overall approach to driving progress, specific policies around areas known to impact gender equality at work, and broader interrogation of organisational culture. Vicky Williams, CEO, Emerald Publishing said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be named as a Times Top 50 employer for gender equality. What makes me most proud in our gender equality journey is that it now infuses every part of our business. Our people hold both leadership and each other to account and that’s an incredibly positive place for us to be. That said, we still have a way to go, particularly when it comes to our gender pay gap. But we’re committed to action, and we don’t accept the status quo. “Our drive to create change is organisational activism in its truest form and I’m privileged to work every day with a team that has such agency and purpose. Being recognised as a Times Top 50 employer for gender equality is affirmation of years of work and it shows how far we’ve come as a small, medium-sized business. This recognition gives us that external validation that our work can be benchmarked against the best of the best, driving us to achieve more and to continuously improve.” Read more here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ecgKPBgK #TimesTop50 #GenderEquality #AcademicPublishing
