In the past 50 years, daily weather-related disasters have averaged 115 deaths and USD 202 million in damage per event. This holds worrying implications for countries which are vulnerable to flooding and sea level rises. Unfortunately, emergency messaging often fails to be disability and age inclusive, leaving many uninformed and at risk. Funded through our Humanitarian Innovation Fund, Leonard Cheshire conducted research in Kurigram District, Bangladesh with the aim of exploring how to create more inclusive disaster preparedness messaging. Research identified crucial factors such as: 🔵 meaningful participation   🔵 accessible communication 🔵 the role of community networks 🔵 and the importance of disaggregated data. Learn how these findings can shape a more inclusive approach to disaster preparedness and protect vulnerable populations. 🌡️Extreme temperatures impact millions of people, with severe health outcomes for hundreds of thousands of people every year. They disproportionally affect those living in urban areas in low- and middle-income countries and can have a devastating impact. Karachi's current heatwave has seen ambulance services overwhelmed and hospitals crowded with heatstroke patients. With temperatures soaring above 40°C, the need for locally informed, evidence-based interventions has never been more critical. The HEAT (Heat Emergency Awareness and Treatment) Bundle is a set of community-based interventions designed to reduce the impact of extreme heat on health outcomes. Tested with funding from our research programme (R2HC), this study is shaping the response to extreme heat in Pakistan. Learn more about this work and discover the potential for this approach to make a difference in other heat-affected regions around the world. Inclusive participation can significantly enhance humanitarian innovation projects and research, but it can be challenging to achieve. Our toolkit offers practical guidance to help you navigate these complexities and leverage stakeholder engagement effectively. Curious about how to apply Participation for Humanitarian Innovation? Here are four essential tips to get you started: 🔵 Identify Key Benefits: It will help determine your motivations for stakeholder engagement. You will clarify critical vs. nice-to-have benefits for your research or project. 🔵 Assess Barriers: You will recognise potential constraints in participation, and be able to identify which barriers can be minimised or managed. 🔵Choose the Right Approach: This will help you identify and understand different participation types, and choose the approach that aligns with your research / project's goals and context. 🔵Use the Participation Matrix: A tool to map out degrees of participation across all research and project stages.
