ALTERNATIVE FUELS: Hydrotreated vegetable oil trialled in two National Oceanography Centre research ships The trial is funded by the UK’s NERC: Natural Environment Research Council, which owns the two vessels, in support of a UK Research and Innovation (#UKRI) goal to achieve net-zero #emission operations by 2040. Kevin Williams, head of research ships engineering at #NOC, said, “As a research organization, NOC is focused on understanding and protecting our #ocean. NEW VESSEL: SeaBubbles launches updated #flyingboat SeaBubbles has launched #SmartBubble, a new flying boat that is designed to carry up to eight people at a speed of 16kts (30km/h). "Foils significantly reduce the drag of our boats, allowing our #hydrofoils to move more easily and with less energy than a conventional boat: a considerable gain in cost and energy," explained Virginie SEURAT, CEO of SeaBubbles. HYDROGEN: DNV awards AiP to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’s electric #liquefiedhydrogen carrier DNV has awarded approval in principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (HD KSOE) for its electric propulsion liquid hydrogen (#LH2) carrier design concept that could enable 80,000m3 of LH2 storage and transportation. Julie Fallon, executive vice president of technical and energy development at Woodside Energy, stated, “We have made clear progress in the pursuit of developing cost-effective and flexible large-scale liquid hydrogen shipping supply chains to support our customers’ needs, thanks to the investment and collaborative effort of all parties involved.” Jotaro Tamura, managing director of MOL (Asia Oceania) and senior management executive officer of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., noted, “We would like to use our technical and operational knowledge, cultivated through many years of shipping experience, to continuously contribute toward the establishment of a hydrogen supply chain.
