About us
Education and Employers is an independent UK-based charity launched in 2009 with the vision of providing children and young people with the inspiration, motivation, knowledge, skills and opportunities they need to help them achieve their potential. It aims to achieve this by working with schools, employers, the national bodies that represent them and a wide range of other partners including the government and third sector organisations. It works with academics and researchers from around the world and its own research is regularly cited by government and international organisations like the OECD. The charity runs Inspiring the Future, a free service which uses innovative match-making technology to connect volunteers with state schools and colleges, quickly, simply and at scale. People can volunteer for at least an hour a year in a local primary or secondary school or virtually, to chat informally about their job and career route. Education and Employers also runs Inspiring Governance, the free governor recruitment and support service. This Department for Education funded service aims to get highly skilled volunteers to serve as governors in some of the most disadvantaged schools in England and in so doing help raise educational achievement.

Over the last year, we have been working with Region Skåne and Mälardalen University in Sweden looking at what children aspire to be when they grow up. The preliminary results of this survey, which uses our ‘Drawing the Future’ methodology, are published here: https://lnkd.in/exRdyZ3G The initial reporting shows that children's aspirations are heavily influenced by people around them. The gender differences with clear stereotypical patterns are surprising, especially when considering Sweden’s leading work on gender equality. In the 20 countries where we have done Drawing the Future, Teacher is nearly always the top choice for girls, with Footballer the top choice for boys. In this study, the boys’ top choice remains Footballer, with Hairdresser as the top choice for girls. Look out for the full report, due to be released June 18th.

One of the UK's most inspirational head teachers has very sadly passed away. Karen Giles was Head of Barham Primary School for over 20 years - a multi-lingual/cultural/faith school in Wembley with nearly a 1000 children. Everyone who visited the school came away inspired by what she and her staff did each and every day to provide children with the best education possible regardless of their background. And visitors came not just from the UK but from across the world - most recently a delegation from Hong Kong who said "We are truly impressed with what the school are doing. We saw the commitment, passion and vision in everyone we met which makes Barham such a nurturing place for children who will achieve a bright future" Karen was a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching and had been Chair of the Inspire Partnership Academy Trust Board and an Advisor to the Varkey Foundation. She also supported a range of leadership development and mentoring programmes. In a very moving tribute Hannah Wilson, founder of Diverse Educators summed it up: 'Karen was brilliant role model, a supportive mentor, a transformational coach and an inspiring leader'. Karen was also a Trustee of our charity and here we say thank you for everything she did for inspiring us all. https://lnkd.in/d7dJxVAr Nick
