Wunni Sabo, a parent from the Zarantinga community in northern Ghana, recalls how his perspective on education changed when he began receiving nudge messages on his mobile phone from School for Life-Ghana (SfL), a research partner of EdTech Hub. These messages urged him to prioritise his daughter’s education over a marriage proposal she received while attending senior high school. As a result, Sabo declined the proposal, emphasising the importance of her becoming self-reliant through education. Now, EdTech Hub has been studying the cost-effectiveness of nudge messaging interventions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) which reveals significant complexities, especially when considering varying economic contexts and implementation settings. ❓What really works in Digital Personalised Learning❓ We love sharing practical leading-edge evidence from our EdTech implementation research studies. So it was great to gather last week with 250 educationalists for the What Works Hub for Global Education conference 🌟 We offered insights from EdTech Hub’s three year implementation research partnership in Kenya with EIDU and Women Educational Researchers of Kenya and led by Louis Major - all focused on building evidence on Digital Personalised Learning... Rebecca Daltry's brilliant presentation explained how we combined an RCT, design-based research, A/B testing and Sandboxes - assessing learning outcomes while also understanding the complex ‘how and why’ behind the data. In summary, Digital Personalised Learning is most effective when: - It is integrated with classroom practices and aligned with curriculum 📚 - Teachers are given flexibility to use it in ways they decide will most help their students 👩🏽🏫 - There is clarity about the detail of what is actually taking place under the ‘personalisation’ label 🌟 High-trust collaboration between EdTech implementers and researchers is not simple! And so it was a bonus to hear reflections from Aidan Friedberg at EIDU and Rebecca Daltry at EdTech Hub about how to make it work well over the long-term. The growing influence of #EdTech in shaping global education systems often brings with it assumptions that prioritise rational, individualistic, and secular ways of learning, marginalising more diverse perspectives. We must recognise these biases and work towards decolonising and desecularising EdTech to ensure it serves all learners. A new framework by Dr Taskeen Adam aims to help policymakers, educators, and EdTech developers identify and address material, epistemic, and political injustices in their work. By challenging the prevailing narratives, we create more inclusive, just educational systems that honour diverse ways of knowing and being. ICT access in Laos is growing, but rural girls remain left behind. Only 54.8% of women use the internet at least once a week, and ownership of mobile phones is slightly lower for women than men. The digital divide is more pronounced in rural areas, making it harder for girls to benefit from EdTech. Prioritising girls' access to digital tools and skills is key to building a more inclusive education system.
