We’re Ecotricity - Britain’s greenest energy company.

About us

The World’s first green electricity company: Green Electricity didn't exist in the world back in 1996. When we offered it for the first time, we became not just Britain’s but the world’s first Green Electricity company – and we kick-started the now global Green Electricity movement. Our mission was and remains to change the way electricity is made and used in Britain. We chose this focus because conventional electricity is responsible for 30% of Britain’s carbon emissions – it’s our biggest single source as a nation – and therefore the biggest single thing we can change. To Green Energy Company: In 2010 we introduced the concept of Green Gas to Britain and in the process we evolved into a fully-fledged Green Energy company. It’s a pretty revolutionary idea – that we can make our own gas (from food waste) and put it into the national gas grid. Our Model: We operate a unique model. We use our customers’ energy bills to fund the building of new sources of Green Energy. We like to refer to this as turning ‘Bills into Mills’ – energy bills into windmills. We’re a not-for-dividend company – all of our profits go into our mission.

It's rolled around to that time of week again when we share some #PositiveClimateNews to help brighten your day! 🚴♀️ Copenhagen is trialling ‘CopenPay’, a scheme running until the 11th August 2024. It rewards eco-friendly actions with free meals, drinks, tours, and activities. As Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, CEO at Wonderful Copenhagen, says: “it is a core task for us to make travelling sustainable." The initiative encourages sustainable behaviour by turning green actions into currency. 🐄The latest Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland figures show that Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions are at their lowest in 30 years. Laura Burke, EPA director general, said the findings were "significant" and signalled "the impact of climate action and decarbonisation measures across Ireland's economy and society". 🌤️Puerto Rico gets four times the sunlight required to meet residential electricity needs, yet over 90% of its power comes from fossil fuels. In 2019, legislators pledged to phase out coal by 2028 and achieve zero-carbon energy by 2050. This new project, which is costing around $861 million dollars (loaned by US Federal government,) is expected to power 43,000 homes! See you next week for some more good green news 😊 💚 Thinking about switching to Ecotricity? Why not give our friendly team a call on 0808 123 0123 today! Back in 2022, Dale Vince established the Young Green Briton Challenge to empower young people to create solutions for climate change. Partnering with GenEarth, Social Innovation for All, and the Ministry of Eco Education, the program has engaged over 6,000 KS3 students in sustainability projects across 23 schools, fostering significant climate change awareness 🌍 Participating schools can incorporate the Young Green Briton Challenge into their curriculum for KS3 students or as an extracurricular activity. Students explore sustainability topics, develop solutions in workshops, and pitch ideas for funding. Finalists attend a national ceremony, where winners receive funding to expand their projects 🏆 Here's what a Year 8 student from Stroud High School, Gloucestershire, had to say about the challenge: “I enjoyed having our voices heard. Often people say, 'It's up to your generation,' but we don’t often have our opinions heard.” Read more in our recently published blog post ✍ : https://lnkd.in/evkTvBrs

Happy Sunday everyone!🌞 Who is up for some #PositiveClimateNews? If you are, then read on below… 🚘Nybolt are leading the global race to develop faster-charging batteries that are more powerful, lighter and durable, with their batteries charging in under 5 minutes! As Paul Shearing, Professor of Sustainable Energy Engineering at the University of Oxford says: “people are going to want fast-charging infrastructure, independent of what car they’re using – everyone wants to do this more quickly.” The firm also claims it has minimised degradation - it says the battery still charges to 80% after 4,000 cycles. 🌱Europe's thriving green roof industry is cooling cities down and boosting biodiversity! Germany's green roofs cover 3.1 million km², and cities like Stuttgart and Copenhagen mandate them. From 2015, France also requires green roofs or solar panels on all new commercial buildings – what a great initiative! 🚋 Switzerland and Germany are sending trams to Ukraine to help decarbonise its transport network. These gifted trams from Switzerland and Germany use up to 2.5 times less electricity than existing trams, according to Lvivelectrotrans, the main provider of transport in Lviv, Ukraine. These new trams mean the city can significantly save on electricity bills which is crucial for them during this time of economic instability. I'm sure by now we've all heard the great news that the 2015 de facto ban on onshore wind has been lifted!🥳 We wanted to take this opportunity not only to celebrate the good news but to highlight some of our own achievements since Ecotricity was founded in 1995 🥇 From our first windmill in 1996, we've now built a total of 74 windmills. The environmental benefit of our windmills is huge, saving over 31,000 tonnes of CO2 each year in the fight against the climate crisis. We couldn't quite squeeze 29 years of progress into this one post so make sure to check out our website for other projects we've completed. With the ban lifted, we’re excited to accelerate our green energy efforts and create a cleaner, greener future!💚 By paying your bill every month you’re helping fight climate change because the money we make from our customers’ bills goes into building new forms of green energy. Are you in need of some #PositiveClimateNews to help beat the Sunday blues? Look no further because we’ve got just the thing for you 👇 🌍The onshore wind ban has been lifted! Over the past 29 years, we’ve built 24 wind parks across the country. These parks are home to 74 windmills, generating enough green energy to power over 56,000 homes. Our windmills are saving over 31,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, aiding in the fight against the climate crisis. With the ban on onshore wind being lifted, we can accelerate our efforts to create a cleaner, greener future for everyone - and we can’t wait! 🚫After new data shows our planet has hit record heat levels over the past year, United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres stated "many governments restrict or prohibit advertising for products that harm human health — like tobacco. Some are now doing the same with fossil fuels”. He urges every country to ban advertising from fossil fuel companies. He believes this will disrupt the industry leading to its decline. 🌊 Oregon's first offshore wind energy areas are set to span nearly 200,000 acres and could power 800,000 homes. Anne Reynolds, vice president for offshore wind at the American Clean Power Association, applauded the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for “listening carefully to Oregonians while ensuring that Oregon offshore wind can be responsibly developed”. #ShowYourStripes 🌡️🌍 Check out these striking visuals projected onto our windmill in Lynch Knoll by University of Reading! These ‘warming stripe’ graphics, created by Ed Hawkins are powerful representations of temperature changes over the past 100 years. Each stripe signifies the average annual temperature in that location, typically spanning from the 1900s to 2023, and in some cases, even starting as far back as the 18th or 19th century 📅 For nearly every country, region, or city, the stripes shift from mostly blue to predominantly red in recent years, showing the alarming rise in average temperatures. “Change starts with a conversation. We have the solutions. It's time for action.” - Professor Ed Hawkins (University of Reading) Want your home to be powered by deep green renewable energy? You know what time it is 👀 We’re back with some #PositiveClimateNews to remind you of the good going on in the world. ⚡Pope Francis recently announced his plan to transition the Vatican City to 100% renewable energy using solar panels, using the Vatican's land in Santa Maria di Galeria. “The pope identifies the burning of fossil fuels as the primary driver of climate change…” The New York Times reported in 2023. “He dismisses those who deny the crisis, and accuses wealthy individuals, corporations and countries of selfishly turning a blind eye.” 🔋UK start-up Bactery harnesses bacteria in soil to generate clean electricity with soil-rechargeable batteries, offering cheap, sustainable energy for farms. “Farmers are increasingly valuing the importance of data to make informed decisions towards resource-efficient agricultural practises,” says Professor Mirella Di Lorenzo at the University of Bath. Bacteria’s soil-powered batteries can last for over 25 years and cost just £25 per unit with no maintenance requirements. 🧑🌾 The Rif region in Morocco faces severe desertification, threatening farming and forcing youth migration. Partnering with local farmers, the Riforest Foundation began in 2023 with permaculture training. As of April 22, 2024, the design phase focuses on soil health, biodiversity, and rainwater harvesting. At least 100 farmers will be trained, ensuring long-term sustainability. Happy #PlasticFreeJuly ♻️ This awareness month isn't about getting rid of all plastics; instead it's about doing what you can to reduce your consumption of single-use plastic. So, why are single-use plastics so bad? ⌛ Plastic sticks around for a long time - it can take up to 500 years to break down, depending on the particular make up of the item. ♻️ Microplastics, which are smaller parts found in single-use plastic, have been found in our water and food - they're everywhere, as they have nowhere to go once humans dispose of them. 🏭 90% of plastic is made from fossil fuels - the demand for plastic packaged items is fuelling the climate crisis, heating our atmosphere. What can you do? 💡 Choose to reuse - carry reusable shopping bags with you when you head to the shop, or keep a spare one in your office drawer or car so you don't need to buy a plastic bag to carry your shopping. 💡 Be the solution, not pollution - think about what you're buying and avoid pre-packaged fresh food if you can. 💡 Choose independent sellers to avoid wasteful packaging, and buy household items in bulk if possible. What are your #PlasticFreeJuly top tips? #GreenEnergy #Sustainability #Ecotricity #Renewables #NoSingleUsePlastic #EcoConscious
