About us
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes. The organisation was established in 1975 and now employs around 300 staff from more than 30 countries. ECMWF is one of the six members of the Co-ordinated Organisations, which also include the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

Congratulation European Space Agency - ESA and JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency on the release of the first amazing images from #EarthCARE! We are totally blown away by the quality of the radar data and are very excited to see the measurement of fall speeds from space for the very first time. We have been preparing for #EarthCARE for a long time and have already begun to test the assimilation of these pioneering data into our model to improve our forecasts. We hope to release first experimental results in the next month! More details at ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ew29Rne4
🆕 Less than a month after it was launched, ESA’s #EarthCARE satellite has returned the first image from one of its instruments – an image that, for the first time from space, unveils the internal structure and dynamics of clouds. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eDkPbPuZ

There is still time to submit a proposal to ECMWF Special Projects. The deadline is 30 June. Read more in the post ⬇️
🚨The deadline to submit your ECMWF Special Projects application closes on 30 June! 🚨 What is it? Special Projects at ECMWF are “experiments or investigations of a scientific or technical nature, likely to be of interest to the general scientific community”, with a duration of up to three years. Once accepted, you will be able to run your Special Project using ECMWF’s HPC resources. 🆕From this year on, Special Projects also have access to the operational European Weather Cloud service. Who can apply? Projects are undertaken in co-operation between several institutions, nationally or internationally, for the latter one insitution must be from one of ECMWF's Member States. How to apply? Please read our dedicated Special Project webpages carefully: https://lnkd.in/eG9AvjVy 1️⃣ Define your project, including its duration 2️⃣ Estimate your resource requirements: Your Computing Representative may be able to advise you on the amounts available 3️⃣ If you are interested in using resources of the European Weather Cloud, add a section outlining your intended usage to your application 4️⃣ Submit your application: via the Special Project request submission web form 5️⃣ Await the approval vote of the ECMWF Council, taking place in December 2024 🔶 If you miss the 30 June deadline, you can submit a "late request" and might be eligible to receive some of our limited “ad-hoc allocation resources” – depending on availabiliity.
