At this week’s CA Transport Group meeting, we were delighted to be joined by colleagues from the rail industry and across our local ecosystem for a discussion of how vital rail infrastructure can help increase capacity, improve user experience, and reduce carbon emissions on our local transport network. Charles Baker from Network Rail provided an overview of improvements across the rail network to increase capacity for passengers and freight and updated on construction of the new Cambridge South station (pictured below), with progress on target for completion in the latter half of 2025. Jeff Jardine and Stuart Edwards from the East West Railway Company spoke about the beginning of a crucial period for the new railway which will link the superclusters in Oxford and Cambridge via Bedford and Milton Keynes. This year will see the first stage of a statutory consultation which will gather feedback and ideas from communities to help develop a single proposal for the entire route. Jeff and Stuart spoke about the ambition of making East West Rail a net-zero carbon railway and emphasised the importance of protecting the environment as a fundamental part of the project. Lastly, we heard from regular group member Emma White about the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority’s new Local Transport and Connectivity Plan (LTCP), which establishes a vision and framework to deliver a reliable and integrated transport system across the whole region. Emma spoke about the significant work underway to implement the LTCP, which ranges from a new electric vehicle infrastructure strategy to a new micromobility strategy and ongoing engagement with local partners including the Greater Cambridge Partnership. We look forward to joining Emma and colleagues for the formal launch of the LTCP at the Combined Authority’s Transport Summit next month, with Charlene Rohr representing Cambridge Ahead on the Summit line up.
