Last week the 500th Endovascular Repair of an Aortic Aneurysm (EVAR) was completed, marking a milestone for our radiology team 🎉 The first EVAR in Blackburn was on 14 October 1999 and was performed by Dr Duncan Gavan who amazingly also performed the 500th case! But while the first one took over three hours to perform, now the average time for the same procedure is 70 minutes EVAR has revolutionised the treatment of aortic aneurysms. It is a safe technique and in many cases is performed percutaneously with a single overnight stay. It also gives an option to many patients who would not normally be offered a surgical aneurysm repair Well done to everyone involved 👏
